The best mahogany electric guitar for rich tones depends on where the mahogany is used, how the body is built, and what the pickups and controls let you do. These four models offer distinct approaches: the Epiphone Les Paul Modern has a mahogany body and coil-splitting humbuckers; the PRS SE Studio combines a mahogany back with a maple top and varied pickup options; the PRS SE Zach Myers is semi-hollow; and the Epiphone Firebird uses a mahogany-and-walnut neck-through design with its own style of pickup.
How to choose a mahogany electric guitar
“Mahogany guitar” does not describe a single construction. Mahogany may form the body, back, neck, or body wings, and some models combine it with maple or walnut. Construction and electronics matter just as much when comparing these guitars. The manufacturer specifications below establish what each model is built with; they do not establish which one sounds best in a controlled listening comparison.
- Check the wood placement: distinguish an all-mahogany description from a mahogany back, neck, or wings paired with other woods.
- Compare the body design: these candidates include solidbody, semi-hollow, and neck-through construction.
- Match the electronics to your needs: pickup type, selector positions, coil splitting, and separate volume and tone controls affect the available configurations.
- Confirm the practical details: check scale length, neck profile, fret count, fretboard, current price, and availability on the current manufacturer or retailer listing. A listed specification cannot tell you how a neck will feel in your hands.
Four mahogany electric guitars to compare
Epiphone Les Paul Modern: single-cut format with coil-splitting
The Epiphone Les Paul Modern pairs a mahogany body with ProBucker humbuckers and coil-splitting. It is a candidate for players who want a familiar single-cut design and humbucker pickups with a switching option to change their response. The manufacturer reserves the right to change specifications without notice, so confirm the current listing before buying. Epiphone Les Paul Modern specifications.
PRS SE Studio: mahogany back, maple top, and multiple pickup combinations
The SE Studio is a solidbody with a mahogany back and maple top, rather than an all-mahogany body. Its combination of two Narrowfield DD “S” pickups and a 58/15 LT “S” treble humbucker is paired with a five-way blade switch and push/pull tone control. That layout makes it the most configuration-focused option in this group. PRS describes the guitar’s tones as “rich, resonant”; that is the maker’s characterization, not an independently measured comparison. PRS SE Studio details.

PRS SE Zach Myers (2025): semi-hollow body and dual humbuckers
The 2025 SE Zach Myers has a chambered mahogany body, maple cap and veneer, a single f-hole, and a mahogany neck. It uses two 245 “S” pickups, a 24.594-inch scale, and two volume and two tone controls. Its semi-hollow construction distinguishes it from the solidbody SE Studio and Les Paul Modern. PRS describes its sound as having “smooth mid-range tones” and “natural, resonant internal reverb”; these are product-page descriptions, not controlled test findings. PRS quotes Zach Myers, the Shinedown guitarist for whom the model is named: “The goal of the PRS SE Zach Myers has always been to make a guitar that stood out in the long line of amazing, affordable guitars that is the SE Series.”

Epiphone Firebird: neck-through build and Firebird pickups
The Firebird combines mahogany body wings with a nine-ply mahogany/walnut neck-through construction. Its ProBucker FB720 pickups use Alnico 2 magnets and blade-magnet construction, which Epiphone distinguishes from mini humbuckers. The maker describes their intended sound as bright and hum-free. This is the outlier for players considering a neck-through design and a pickup voice different from the conventional dual-humbucker layouts above. Which model fits your priorities?

- Consider the SE Studio if a solidbody with a mahogany back, maple top, and several pickup combinations is the priority.
- Look at the SE Zach Myers if you want semi-hollow construction, a mahogany neck, and conventional dual-humbucker controls.
- Compare the Firebird if neck-through construction and its blade-magnet pickups appeal more than a standard Les Paul-style setup.
