For one 24/7 YouTube playlist made from already-encoded video, start by testing a Linux VPS with about 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB of RAM. This is a practical trial configuration—not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee. It assumes FFmpeg loops and sends the finished media without continuously re-encoding it. If FFmpeg must encode, transcode, scale or apply demanding filters, size the VPS from a test of the exact workload instead.
Choose specs for the FFmpeg workload, not just the word “streaming”
A static loop and a live software encode place very different demands on a server. Copying packets from a finished media file is generally far lighter than encoding every frame in real time. Resolution, frame rate, codec, filters, concurrent jobs and the provider’s CPU-sharing policy all affect resource use.
| Workload | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Looping an already-encoded playlist without heavy filters or re-encoding | Test a VPS around 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM | Stable output, unexpectedly high CPU use, available disk space and outbound transfer allowance |
| Encoding, transcoding, scaling or applying substantial filters | No universal minimum is established; test the intended VPS and command | FFmpeg speed stays at or above real time under demanding scenes, with CPU capacity to spare for steady operation |
The first configuration is an informed starting estimate for a single lightweight stream, not a benchmark or a guaranteed minimum. One provider’s 2026 guide separately gives a 2-vCPU/2–4-GB baseline for a static loop; that is commercial provider guidance, not an independent performance test. [provider guide]
What the VPS has to deliver to YouTube
YouTube’s requirements describe the stream arriving at its ingest system; they do not specify the VPS CPU or RAM needed to create it. For H.264, YouTube’s current live-stream guidance recommends these bitrates: [YouTube live encoder settings]

| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are recommendations for the incoming H.264 stream—not guaranteed throughput from a particular VPS or a requirement to select the highest bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS when you want encrypted transmission. Test upload capacity and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
If FFmpeg will encode or transcode continuously
Run the actual command with representative files on the intended server. When FFmpeg encodes live, it must keep pace with playback: a sustained reported speed below 1x means it is falling behind. The result can change with resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, motion and detail in the footage, filters and other simultaneous jobs.

Google’s VP9 guidance describes 1x as the minimum real-time speed and warns that slower encoding can cause buffering and broken transmission. Its quad-core desktop examples show some tested 2160p and 1440p settings falling below real time. Those examples illustrate workload sensitivity; they do not predict every codec or VPS. AWS’s 2024 FFmpeg 6.0 benchmark compared particular x264 and x265 workloads on specified CPU and GPU instances, including multiple output resolutions. Its results show that the tested GPU instances handled more simultaneous multi-resolution encodes than the tested CPU instances, but they do not establish the right choice for one pre-encoded playlist. AWS advises validating results for the intended workload. [AWS FFmpeg benchmark]

Budget for disk, network transfer and sustained CPU
Disk
Disk capacity depends on the media files you keep on the VPS, plus the operating system, logs and temporary files. The outgoing stream bitrate does not determine how much source media storage you need. Leave room for the playlist and files created during normal operation.

Outbound transfer
A continuous stream can use substantial monthly data. Estimate transfer from the actual outgoing bitrate and planned uptime, then check the selected plan’s included transfer, overage terms and traffic policies. Provider network capacity and transfer allowance are different questions: a high port speed does not by itself prove the plan includes enough monthly data.
YouTube advises checking upload bitrate with a speed test and testing a stream with representative movement and audio. Its recommendations are not proof that a provider will sustain that rate continuously. See the live plan details for DigitalOcean Droplets and Hetzner Cloud before choosing; plan prices, availability and transfer terms can change.

CPU policy and total cost
Do not compare plans by vCPU count or base price alone. Hetzner describes shared resources as suitable for variable usage and dedicated vCPUs as appropriate for constantly high CPU use. DigitalOcean’s plan table presents compute, memory, storage, transfer and listed price together. These are useful comparison examples, not proof that either host is best in every region. [Hetzner shared and dedicated vCPU guidance] [DigitalOcean plan information]
Compare the server location, outbound capacity, transfer allowance and sustained CPU policy, along with any needed IPv4 address, backups or other add-ons. A low advertised monthly price can be a poor fit if the selected plan’s transfer terms or CPU policy do not suit a continuously running stream. No universal cheapest provider or guaranteed minimum configuration is established here; recheck current prices and regional plan availability before committing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the setup before paying for a long term
- Install the intended FFmpeg build. Use the same version and command you plan to run continuously, with representative playlist files.
- Check the workload. For an encode, watch FFmpeg’s reported speed through demanding scenes and confirm it stays at least at
1x. For a packet-copy loop, look for unexpected CPU load and stable output. - Test the final stream settings. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, audio configuration and YouTube ingest bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Observe a sustained run. Check process stability, reconnects, resource growth and FFmpeg logs. Monitor CPU, RAM, disk and network use rather than relying on the plan’s headline specifications.
- Check both ends. Confirm YouTube’s stream health and verify the provider’s transfer accounting, sustained CPU policy and billing for the exact plan and location.
YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health. How long to test and which monitoring tools to use depend on your setup; a trial run does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot common sizing and stream problems
- FFmpeg speed stays below
1xduring an encode: the current setup cannot keep pace with the tested workload. Reduce encoding demands or filters, or test a VPS with more suitable sustained CPU capacity. Repeat the test with representative demanding footage. - The loop works, but the server’s CPU is unexpectedly busy: check whether the command is re-encoding, scaling or applying filters instead of simply sending the existing stream. Also check for concurrent processes and the host’s CPU-sharing policy.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: compare the actual outgoing bitrate with YouTube’s guidance, test the VPS’s upload capacity and review the FFmpeg output and stream configuration. A provider’s advertised network speed alone does not establish stable throughput to YouTube ingest.
- The stream stops after running for a while: inspect FFmpeg logs, process status and network behavior, then check provider restart support and the stream’s reconnect behavior. A VPS specification by itself does not ensure automatic process recovery.
- The plan runs out of transfer or storage: check the host’s usage records and billing terms, reduce unnecessary locally stored files, or choose a plan whose transfer and disk capacity fit the actual workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the stream uses your upload’s quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
