For a low-cost do-it-yourself setup, rent an always-on virtual machine (VM) in India or a nearby region, store your pre-encoded video on persistent storage, and use FFmpeg to loop it to the RTMPS stream URL and key generated in YouTube Studio. This keeps your home computer offline, but you still manage the server, encoder, monitoring, recovery, and bills. No provider can be named the cheapest on the available evidence: a fair comparison needs current regional VM, storage, data-transfer, and tax costs.
Which setup should you choose?
There are two practical routes: administer a VM and FFmpeg yourself, or use a managed cloud service that handles the looping process. StreamNeo is the first managed option to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
| Option | Best suited to | What you manage |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Creators who want a managed YouTube loop without maintaining a server | Upload the video, add the YouTube stream key, and start the stream; the service handles cloud looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. |
| VM plus FFmpeg | Creators comfortable administering a server who want control over the setup | VM and storage, FFmpeg configuration, the stream key, monitoring, restart and recovery procedures, and costs. |
| Other managed service | Creators seeking a service that handles prerecorded 24/7 streaming | Compare current pricing, supported workflows, and recovery provisions before choosing. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded 24/7 streaming tool; its current price is not established here. |
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is not an obvious low-cost substitute for a simple loop-to-YouTube encoder: it is a media pipeline that transcodes live linear inputs and saves outputs to Cloud Storage, rather than a direct looping encoder VM workflow. See Google’s Live Stream API overview.
What you need before setting up a VM
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your intended start time. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, including any music and performance rights needed for live and archived use.
- An always-on VM in India or a nearby region, plus persistent storage sized for the media. Confirm the region, storage, outbound network-transfer charges, and applicable taxes with the provider before provisioning.
- An FFmpeg installation and a way to keep the encoder process running and inspect its logs. The precise service manager or restart configuration depends on the VM’s operating system and provider.
- A stable connection from the VM to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Test stream health before relying on the setup for continuous broadcasting.
Configure YouTube and prepare the video
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the encoder-based live-stream creation flow. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create a stream and copy its ingest details. Use the RTMPS stream URL and stream key generated for your YouTube stream. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Prepare a rights-cleared, pre-encoded file. Matching the media to your intended output can avoid real-time transcoding. Check that the VM can read the file from persistent storage after a restart.
- Choose a modest starting output. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode at that resolution economically. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Check the video against your output. If it is already encoded to the format and settings you intend to send, relay it without adding unnecessary real-time encoding. If conversion is required, account for the VM’s additional processing load and test the result before going live.
Loop the file to YouTube with FFmpeg
On the VM, place the media on persistent storage and run FFmpeg with a loop input, the YouTube-generated RTMPS endpoint, and the stream key. The exact command depends on the file’s codecs and whether you can copy its streams or need to encode them. Do not paste an example endpoint or key from another service: AWS’s FFmpeg example is for Amazon IVS, not YouTube. Use YouTube’s own URL and key.

Replace the quoted destination with the RTMPS URL and key supplied in YouTube Studio; treat the complete destination as a secret. This copy-mode pattern is appropriate only when the input codecs and stream format are accepted by the destination. If the file needs conversion, configure the required video and audio codecs, constant bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval instead of assuming this command will work unchanged.
FFmpeg documents loop options and RTMP-family output behavior; the example above is an operational starting pattern, not a guarantee for every input file or YouTube stream configuration. Watch YouTube’s stream health after starting and test a full loop before depending on it.

Keep the stream available and protect the archive
A running FFmpeg process is not the same as a resilient service. Arrange to see when the process exits, and decide how it will be restarted. Also check the VM’s own restart behavior and storage persistence after maintenance or reboot. You remain responsible for diagnosing an ingest failure and restoring the stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive matters, end and restart the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, and retain a separate recording backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Estimate the real cost of a DIY cloud setup
Do not compare VM rental prices alone. Estimate the recurring total using the VM, persistent storage, outbound transfer, and taxes, and verify that the chosen region is available and suitable for your use. A pre-encoded file may avoid real-time transcoding, but it does not remove the need to pay for the VM, storage, or data transfer.
No defensible cheapest India-region provider or total monthly cost can be named from the available figures. Before committing, compare providers’ current regional prices and transfer terms, and confirm whether your selected VM can relay the pre-encoded stream or would need to transcode it. There are no performance or provider-price test results here to use as a substitute for that check.

Copyright and monetization limits
YouTube’s livestream terms require live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and require creators to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content, including music licensing rights, while following applicable laws and licensing requirements. Owning a video file or a recording does not automatically establish all music, performance, or other permissions. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and verify the rights for every element you broadcast.
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its 2025 clarification renamed the repetitious-content rule to inauthentic content; mass-produced or repetitive material may be ineligible, and channel reviewers may assess the channel as a whole. A continuous loop is not a promise of monetizable watch time or channel eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start the first broadcast | Live streaming has not finished activating on the channel. | Enable streaming in YouTube Studio in advance; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube receives no stream or the connection fails | Wrong ingest URL or key, an incorrectly assembled destination, or a failed outbound connection. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Studio, keep them private, and confirm the VM can connect to the ingest endpoint. |
| The video is rejected or playback is unhealthy | Input codecs or output settings do not match the intended stream. | Inspect the media’s codecs and settings; use YouTube’s H.264, bitrate, and keyframe recommendations as a starting point, then check stream health. |
| The loop stops after a server interruption | The FFmpeg process did not restart, or the video was not on persistent storage. | Check process logs and restart behavior, and verify that the file remains accessible after a VM reboot. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | The live stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold, or no separate recording was retained. | For an archive, end and restart before 12 hours and keep a separate backup. |
| The channel’s monetization status is uncertain | A stream’s repetition or other channel content may not meet YouTube’s monetization policies. | Review the current policy and assess the channel as a whole; do not assume that looping itself earns monetizable watch time. |
