Best Linux VPS Setup for a Continuous YouTube Stream of Church Services

A practical Ubuntu VPS pattern for looping prerecorded church services to YouTube, with ingest settings, credential hygiene, systemd supervision, and recovery checks.

A Linux VPS can keep a prerecorded church-service stream running without a desktop session: use FFmpeg to send the media to YouTube and systemd to supervise the encoder process. That setup is different from broadcasting a live service. For a live camera and soundboard feed, you must first capture and deliver that signal to the VPS; there is no universal camera-to-VPS method established here. A VPS is suitable only if its processing capacity and network allowance fit the stream you plan to send, and you test the complete path before relying on it.

Choose the signal path before choosing the VPS

Prerecorded services or a playlist

For recorded services, the media files can reside on the VPS. FFmpeg reads them and sends an encoded stream to YouTube. Decide how files should play: one recording repeatedly, or a sequence of recordings. Confirm that the chosen playlist behavior handles the end of each file and the end of the list; an encoder process that exits when its input ends will not create a continuous broadcast by itself.

A live service from cameras and a mixer

A live service begins with cameras and the church’s audio mix, not with files already on the VPS. You need a capture and transport path that gets the combined program feed to the encoder. The available sources do not establish one universal way to capture or relay that signal, so map your actual cameras, switcher, audio mix, network connection, and encoder location before selecting a server. Do not assume that a VPS loop configuration for prerecorded files is a complete live-production setup.

Set YouTube-compatible output

YouTube Help lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream in transit. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and sets four seconds as the maximum. For stereo audio, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees about what a given VPS can encode or deliver.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

The bitrates above are YouTube Help’s H.264 ingest recommendations, on the current page accessed in 2026; they are not independent measurements or a promise of VPS performance. Choose a resolution and frame rate that the source material, encoder, VPS network, and YouTube ingest can sustain together. Higher output settings can increase encoding load and traffic. Test representative speech, music, motion, and transitions, then check YouTube’s live control room for stream health and messages during a real test.

Build a headless prerecorded-stream setup

The pattern below reflects a public Ubuntu VPS example using FFmpeg and systemd for looping local media. It is a community implementation, not a YouTube-certified architecture or a configuration proven for every church or VPS. The command is a starting point for one local file, not a complete playlist or live-camera workflow. Replace placeholders with your own paths and private stream key, and verify that your installed FFmpeg supports the selected encoder and options.

  1. Prepare the server and media. Use an Ubuntu VPS, install FFmpeg from a trusted package source, and copy the recording to a stable location such as /srv/church/sermon.mp4. Confirm the file plays and has the intended picture and sound. Check that the VPS plan permits the required continuous outbound traffic.
  2. Create a YouTube live broadcast and obtain its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Use the RTMPS ingest address and key shown for your broadcast; do not assume an ingest hostname or key format.
  3. Store credentials outside the command and source repository. Create a restricted environment file, for example /etc/church-stream.env, with an entry such as STREAM_KEY=your_actual_key. Restrict access to the file so only the account running the stream can read it. Do not commit the key to Git, publish it in a script, or paste it into a public support request.
  4. Test FFmpeg in a terminal first. A one-file H.264/AAC example is:
    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/church/sermon.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/app/${STREAM_KEY}"
Run it only after loading the protected key into the shell environment, for example with set -a; . /etc/church-stream.env; set +a. Replace YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS with the RTMPS address displayed by YouTube for the stream. This example loops one file, encodes H.264 at 30 fps with an 8 Mbps target and 60-frame keyframes (two seconds at 30 fps), and encodes stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. The 8 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30; set the actual output resolution deliberately to match your source and chosen quality. To use a different resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, change the encoder settings together rather than assuming this example suits every file or VPS. The veryfast preset is an encoder trade-off, not a guarantee that the server has enough CPU. Test resource use and stream health before relying on it.
  5. Check the received stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm the control room reports a healthy ingest and that picture and sound are present. Test the stream with representative material and monitor YouTube’s health messages. Do not judge success solely by seeing FFmpeg running on the VPS.
  6. Run it under systemd. After the terminal test works, create a systemd service that invokes the same FFmpeg command, loads the restricted environment file with EnvironmentFile=/etc/church-stream.env, and runs under a dedicated, non-root service account with access to the media. Enable the service at boot and use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. Inspect service state and logs with systemctl status and journalctl -u while also checking YouTube’s stream health. A restart policy can relaunch a process after failure; it cannot prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Plan for endings, disconnects, and recovery

  • A file ends: A single-file loop can repeat the same recording, but it may not produce the schedule or transitions your church needs. A playlist requires explicit handling of each file and the end of the list. Test the exact sequence before publishing it.
  • The encoder exits: systemd can restart a failed process, but repeated restart attempts are not the same as a recovered broadcast. Check its logs and the YouTube control room after a restart.
  • The VPS loses connectivity: The stream cannot reach YouTube during an outage. Verify the provider’s network terms and decide how the operator will detect and respond to a connection loss.
  • YouTube reports unhealthy or stalled ingest: Check the destination’s health indicators as well as the Linux process. A process can remain alive while the received stream is stalled or unusable.
  • The broadcast should stop at a particular time: Process supervision alone does not establish a complete schedule or broadcast lifecycle. Test how YouTube’s live event behaves when the encoder stops, and define who checks or ends the event.
  • Credentials are exposed: Treat a disclosed stream key as compromised. Replace it in YouTube Studio and update the restricted server configuration before restarting the encoder.

Estimate the VPS cost and capacity from your workload

No universal VPS size, provider, monthly price, or uptime guarantee follows from this setup. Transcoding video is more CPU-intensive than passing compatible media through, and the requirement depends on the source, output settings, and encoder configuration. Continuous outbound traffic also matters: compare the expected stream bitrate and run time with the provider’s current bandwidth allowance, overage terms, and pricing before choosing a plan. Include the time needed to maintain FFmpeg, systemd, credentials, monitoring, and recovery in the cost comparison.
