OBS Studio is the most directly documented Linux option for looping Gurbani videos to YouTube Live. For one video, add it as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For an ordered sequence of videos, use VLC Video with VLC installed and enable Loop Playlist. OBS runs on Linux; the playlist source adds a VLC dependency.
Choose the right OBS source
| Your setup | OBS source | Loop setting | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video repeated continuously | Media Source | Loop | OBS documents this source and setting for Linux. |
| Several local videos played in sequence | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
These are documented features, not a performance comparison. Choose based on whether you want to repeat one clip or cycle through a playlist. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Install OBS on Linux
OBS lists Flatpak and Ubuntu builds as officially supported and recommends Flatpak for distributions other than Ubuntu. Distribution packages outside those supported builds may be maintained by their communities. Linux requires OpenGL 3.3 or later. Check the OBS install instructions for the appropriate option for your distribution.
Set up the looping video in OBS
- Prepare the video. Keep the Gurbani video available as a local file. For a playlist, prepare the local files you want to play in order.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, select the scene that will contain the video.
- Add one video: in the Sources area, choose + > Media Source, create or select a source, and select the video file. Enable Loop.
- Or add a playlist: install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, then choose + > VLC Video. Add the video files to the playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check the scene preview. Confirm the source is visible and the intended video plays. For a playlist, verify its order before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains how to get started.

- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the workflow.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the server URL and stream key as required by the available connection method.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it publicly; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update OBS.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, and verify the picture and sound in YouTube before a public broadcast.
Choose encoder settings for your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS where available. Its general guidance lists H.264 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the resolution and bitrate appropriate to your chosen output rather than assuming a single setting fits every connection; YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec in its encoder settings and bitrate guide.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds where the encoder exposes that setting.
- Use CBR and a YouTube-supported bitrate for your target resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Choose audio encoding and bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance and check that the source audio is present and audible.
- Do not select a bitrate based on download speed: the stream uses upload bandwidth.
Test the complete broadcast
Before relying on a long-running stream, test the exact OBS scene, media, encoder settings, and internet connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. For a looping recording, pay particular attention to whether audio continues cleanly at the loop boundary. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips during the test.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that a network disruption can break a stream. Measure upload capacity on the connection that will carry the broadcast, then leave that margin rather than setting the stream at the connection’s full measured capacity.
Check rights before rebroadcasting
A Gurbani text or subject does not by itself establish that a particular recording or video is cleared for live rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having necessary worldwide rights to exploit live content, including applicable music licensing rights. Check the permissions for the exact performance, recording, and video. The rights status of an individual recording depends on its work, recording, license, and relevant territories.

Troubleshooting OBS-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| The video does not repeat | The source’s loop option is off, or the wrong source type is being used. | For a single file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video. |
| YouTube will not accept the stream | The channel may not meet live-stream eligibility requirements, or OBS may have an incorrect server URL or key. | Check channel verification and any restrictions in the preceding 90 days; confirm the current URL and key in Live Control Room. |
| Connection is unstable or stream health reports problems | The configured total bitrate may be too close to or above available upload capacity, or the connection may be disrupted. | Measure upload capacity on the streaming connection, reduce bitrate to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test again. |
| Video is visible but audio cuts or clicks at each repeat | The source recording may have a discontinuity at its end or start. | Listen through a complete loop in OBS and review the source file’s boundary before broadcasting. |
