Best Linux Software for Automating Prerecorded YouTube Live Streams

OBS Studio can loop local prerecorded video on Linux and send it to YouTube Live. Here’s how to set it up—and what looping does not automate.

OBS Studio is the strongest documented Linux starting point for streaming prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Its Media Source can play a local video and loop it; YouTube’s encoder workflow connects OBS to a scheduled stream using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. That automates playback, but it does not, by itself, guarantee unattended startup, failure recovery, or reliable 24/7 operation.

What “automating” a prerecorded live stream involves

A recurring video broadcast can involve four separate jobs. Decide which ones you need before choosing software:

  1. Playback: load a video and repeat it, or rotate through a playlist.
  2. Scheduling: create a YouTube Live event and its upcoming watch page.
  3. Going live: connect an encoder to YouTube and start the broadcast.
  4. Unattended operation: keep the feed running, detect failures, recover, and stop or restart when needed.

OBS provides a documented Linux desktop workflow for local media playback and looping. YouTube’s event and encoder workflow handles the platform connection and scheduling, but a looped source is not the same as a fully unattended broadcast system.

Linux options at a glance

Option Best fit What is established What not to assume
OBS Studio A visible local setup for playing a prerecorded file into YouTube Live. OBS supports Linux, and its Media Source supports common video formats and a Loop property. Looping a file alone does not establish scheduled encoder startup, automatic recovery, or continuous unattended reliability.
YouTube Live with an encoder Creating an event, watch page, and encoder connection. YouTube’s workflow uses a server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Scheduling creates an upcoming event; the encoder still has to send the feed. Scheduling an event does not make a local computer start and maintain its encoder automatically.
Gyre Considering a hosted option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded video. This listing does not establish that Gyre is a Linux desktop application, compare its performance or plans, or certify a partner program.

Set up a prerecorded stream with OBS on Linux

1. Enable live streaming and create an event

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of the planned broadcast.
  2. Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page and can let viewers set reminders, but it does not replace the encoder feed.
  3. Open the event’s Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs.

2. Install OBS using a suitable Linux route

OBS recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and documents an Ubuntu PPA/package route. Packages offered by other distributions may be community maintained rather than official OBS builds; check the OBS Linux installation guidance for the route appropriate to your distribution.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Add the video and enable looping

  1. Open OBS and choose a scene, or create one for the broadcast.
  2. Add a Media Source to the scene and select the local prerecorded file. OBS documents support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM in Media Source.
  3. Enable the source’s Loop option if the file should repeat. Check that the source is visible in the preview and that its audio is present at the expected level.
  4. If you want a sequence of recordings rather than one repeated file, arrange and test the playback workflow before going live. The documented Media Source loop establishes file repetition; it does not establish automatic playlist management or failure recovery.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In OBS streaming settings, select the YouTube service preset if available, or enter the server URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room.
  2. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder and YouTube ingest settings support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
  3. Set the video and audio encoding options to values supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and appropriate to your connection. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings should match its current requirements.
  4. Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the event again.

5. Preview, start, and monitor the event

  1. Start the OBS encoder early enough to let the incoming feed appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Inspect the preview for the correct video, picture quality, and sound before making the event public. Start the YouTube event as required by the event’s auto-start configuration.
  3. Keep monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality and check the public watch page. YouTube explicitly recommends continuous monitoring.
  4. When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder in OBS. Test the complete start-and-stop sequence before relying on it for a time-sensitive broadcast.

Know the limits of local automation

With OBS on a Linux computer, the file can loop while OBS is running and connected. The computer, OBS process, network connection, and encoder feed still matter. The official OBS and YouTube capabilities described here do not establish that a particular Linux setup will restart OBS after a crash, reconnect reliably after an outage, or operate indefinitely without attention. Test those behaviours on your own setup rather than treating the Loop setting as a recovery system.

YouTube’s current encoder help documentation says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat 12 hours as a platform threshold for a single event, not a guarantee that a longer broadcast will be archived as one video. Check YouTube’s current guidance before planning a continuous stream around that limit.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

  • Use recordings you own or have permission to broadcast, including all music, footage, images, and other included material. A recording being prerecorded does not remove copyright obligations.
  • Check YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and your channel’s eligibility before scheduling. A stream-key connection does not establish that a video complies with platform policies.
  • Replaying material repeatedly does not, on its own, establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Review the current reused-content and monetization rules separately if monetization is a goal.
  • Consider what viewers will see between program segments, during a playback fault, or when the video reaches its end. Preview the actual feed and monitor it after going live.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The scheduled watch page exists, but no video appears. The event was scheduled, but OBS is not sending an encoder feed or is using the wrong event credentials. Confirm OBS is streaming and that its server URL and key match the selected event in Live Control Room.
The video plays once and stops. The Media Source Loop option is not enabled, or the wrong source is playing. Check the source properties in the active scene and verify the selected local file.
The stream connects but has no sound. The file may lack the expected audio, or the OBS audio path or level may be wrong. Check the file’s audio, OBS meters, and the incoming preview before starting the public event.
YouTube does not accept the encoder feed. The server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the encoder settings may not match YouTube’s current requirements. Recheck the event credentials in Live Control Room and YouTube’s current encoder settings. Replace an exposed key.
The broadcast stops when the computer or connection fails. A local OBS setup depends on the computer, OBS process, and network remaining available. Restore the computer and connection, then verify the encoder and event status. Do not assume the loop setting automatically recovers a dropped stream.
A long event is not archived as expected. YouTube documents automatic archiving for encoder streams under 12 hours; longer streams are outside that stated threshold. Check the current YouTube encoder documentation and plan the event duration accordingly.
