OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for a Linux YouTube gaming channel that needs both a live stream and saved gameplay replays. It can stream and record at the same time, and its Replay Buffer lets you save recent gameplay with a hotkey. Those are separate outputs that need separate setup. OBS can reconnect after a dropped connection, but a genuinely always-on deployment also depends on Linux session behavior, power, network reliability, and YouTube stream health.
Choose the setup that matches what “replay channel” means
A gaming replay channel can mean a live feed of ongoing gameplay, local capture of gameplay for later editing, or a live stream accompanied by a rolling buffer for saving recent moments. OBS Studio covers streaming and local recording/replay, but saving a clip does not automatically upload it to YouTube.
- Continuous live gameplay: configure OBS to capture the game and audio and send the output to YouTube.
- Save recent action: enable Replay Buffer and assign a save hotkey; use it during gameplay to write the buffered segment to disk.
- Both: configure and test streaming and recording independently, then confirm they work together while the game is running.

Configure OBS for YouTube gaming
1. Build a scene for the game and its audio
- In OBS, create a scene for the game stream.
- Add the game as a source using the capture method that fits your setup. Add the intended microphone and desktop or game audio sources, then check their levels in OBS.
- If video comes from a console or a second computer, a capture card can be used as a source. Same-PC gameplay capture does not by itself require one.
Check that the game, overlays, and audio are actually present in the preview. A static desktop test is not a reliable stand-in for fast gameplay motion.

2. Set canvas, output, frame rate, and encoder
The base canvas is the working layout; the scaled output is the resolution sent to the stream or recording. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your system can sustain while the game is running. OBS warns that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps, so test the full workload before relying on it.
On Linux, OBS documents support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, but which options appear depends on the GPU generation, installed drivers, and OBS build. Check the encoder choices available on your own system and monitor game and stream performance. Hardware encoding is not automatically the best choice for every machine. For gaming, do not select NVENC’s “Ultra High Quality” tuning on the assumption that it is a universal quality upgrade: OBS says that mode targets live-action artifacts such as camera noise, is not recommended for gaming, and significantly reduces throughput. See OBS’s NVENC feature notes.

3. Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s live ingest guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and recommends RTMPS. Audio can use AAC or MP3; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full current table and stream setup details.

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not a universal setting: select the value for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and use YouTube’s full table for combinations not shown here. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Its guidance calls for 10-bit HDR, recommends HEVC for HDR, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not enable HDR unless the capture, encoding, and ingest path all support it.
YouTube also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For audio it lists 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1, with 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1. Treat these as YouTube guidance inspected on 2026-10-03; settings and recommendations can change.

4. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key using the available option. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate, and verify the YouTube preview and stream health before making the stream public.
5. Enable Replay Buffer and a save hotkey
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and enable Replay Buffer. Set a buffer duration that suits how far back you want to save and the storage and memory your system can spare.
- Open Settings > Hotkeys and assign a convenient key to save the Replay Buffer. OBS provides separate start, stop, and save buffer hotkeys; assign the controls you need and avoid conflicts with game controls.
- Start the buffer and test the save hotkey during representative gameplay. Confirm where the clip is written and that it plays correctly.
The saved clip is a local recording; it is not automatically published to YouTube. OBS’s guide to advanced recording settings explains output configuration.
Choose a resilient local recording format
For long sessions, interruption resilience matters as much as editing convenience. OBS recommends MKV for most use cases because it supports OBS encoder combinations and an unfinished file can remain playable or recoverable after an interruption. A directly recorded MP4 or MOV may be more compatible with editing software and platforms, but if writing is interrupted before finalization, the file may be unrecoverable. OBS says fragmented MP4/MOV improves resilience while offering broader compatibility than MKV, subject to codec and editing-tool support.

A practical approach is to record to MKV, then remux or convert if your editor or upload workflow needs another container. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, dated 2023-03-26, recommends the best available hardware encoder for high-quality local recording and ranks AV1 above HEVC above H.264 for its stated quality/file-size advice. It notes software AV1 encoding requires a high-end CPU for real-time use and gives recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40, and Intel Arc hardware as examples of AV1-capable classes; that dated list is not a complete current compatibility list.

OBS’s overview describes automatic reconnect as an available setting, worth reviewing for a long-running stream. Reconnection does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. A stream can still fail if the system sleeps or loses power, the Linux session ends, the network drops, the game or encoder overloads the machine, or YouTube reports a stream-health problem.
The OBS documentation cited here does not establish one universal recipe for launching OBS as a resilient background service at Linux boot. Startup behavior depends on the distribution, desktop, and deployment. For an unattended setup, test the exact machine and session behavior—including reboot, network interruption, reconnect, and recovery—rather than assuming a desktop launch setting is a 24/7 service.

Troubleshoot common failures

Keep copyright and channel policy in view
Streaming gameplay or replay footage does not grant rights to every element in it. Game audio, licensed music, cutscenes, and other included material can trigger copyright claims or restrictions. Review the relevant rights and YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before broadcasting, and use material you have permission to stream. YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance covers technical ingest, not permission to use copyrighted content. A channel built around repeated or reused footage should also ensure its content meets YouTube’s monetization and channel policies; technical ability to loop a stream does not establish eligibility.
