Debian stable is the best default for a headless 24/7 YouTube music radio server if you are comfortable administering Debian. Ubuntu Server LTS is an equally practical choice when it better fits your experience, hosting provider, or package workflow. This is a practical recommendation based on documented support and maintenance—not evidence that Debian is inherently more reliable or faster for continuous streaming.
First decide what “YouTube music radio” means for your setup: a radio station served to listeners through Icecast, or a continuous broadcast on YouTube Live. The distribution can host either workflow, but the publishing chain is different.
Choose the broadcast path before choosing the server software
Internet radio for listeners
In a conventional internet-radio setup, Liquidsoap creates and encodes the programme stream, then sends it to Icecast. Icecast relays that stream to listeners. Liquidsoap’s documentation describes this division of work in its Icecast and Shoutcast workflow; Icecast describes itself as free server software for streaming multimedia on its download page.
A continuous broadcast on YouTube Live
Liquidsoap also documents RTMP output to YouTube Live. That is a separate publishing destination: Icecast relays streams to radio listeners; it does not itself publish the programme to YouTube. See Liquidsoap’s overview for its supported capabilities. Choose the destination first, then verify that your selected software build includes the output and codec support your workflow needs.

Install the software that matches your workflow
Use distribution packages for a conventional host
The Icecast project says Debian and derivatives such as Ubuntu package Icecast as icecast2, and its guidance favors distribution packages when their system integration suits the installation. Liquidsoap documents Debian and Ubuntu builds as well as other installation options. Consult the current project instructions before installing: Icecast downloads and Liquidsoap installation.

Check versions and build features, not just package names
Confirm the version available for your release and whether it supports the output format, codecs, and destination you plan to use. The names of packages alone do not establish that a particular build has every feature your stream requires. Liquidsoap also publishes packages or images for additional distributions, but the available documentation does not establish one universally superior installation method.
Keep the server headless unless your production chain needs a desktop
A basic automated audio service does not by itself require a desktop environment or OBS. OBS may be useful in a production chain that needs its scenes, sources, or encoding workflow, but its Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and an X or Wayland environment. OBS also warns that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording; practical performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Plan for continuous operation without assuming a hardware minimum
The available official guidance does not establish a universal minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or upload bandwidth for a 24/7 audio stream. Requirements vary with the encoding settings, number of outputs, media and audience. OBS desktop requirements are not a sizing guide for a headless audio server.
- Estimate storage from the actual media library and any logs or recordings you intend to retain.
- Check that the host’s sustained network upload can support the chosen output or outputs; include headroom rather than treating a single bitrate as a complete capacity plan.
- Verify your audio format, codec, sample rate, and encoding options against the target service or listener setup.
- Use a service manager or container restart policy appropriate to your deployment, and test what happens after a process failure or host reboot.
- Schedule operating-system and package maintenance, and know how you will restore the service if an update or configuration change causes trouble.
These are planning checks, not claims of a particular tested capacity or reliability level. No comparative uptime or performance result establishes that Debian or Ubuntu is inherently more dependable for this workload.

Account for music rights and platform rules separately
Choosing Linux does not grant rights to broadcast music or determine whether a YouTube account can use a particular live-stream feature. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the tracks and the intended audience, and check current YouTube policies for your account and broadcast format. Those questions depend on the music and account; they are not answered by the operating-system or streaming-software documentation cited here.
