Best Lightweight OBS Alternatives for a Continuous YouTube Playlist Stream

For a prerecorded YouTube playlist that should keep running with your computer off, compare cloud playout, self-managed FFmpeg, browser studios, and dedicated hardware.

For a prerecorded playlist that needs to stay live on YouTube while your personal computer is off, choose a cloud playout service. StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports files as uploaded up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. A self-managed FFmpeg setup on a VPS is an alternative for technically confident operators who want to manage the server themselves. Browser studios such as StreamYard and Restream are better suited to producing live shows than unattended playlist playout.

What “lightweight” means for continuous streaming

For this use case, “lightweight” can mean four different things: low CPU use on your own computer, little setup, no computer that must remain on, or low total cost. Those are not interchangeable. A browser app may avoid installing desktop software but still be the wrong tool for unattended looping; a VPS removes the home computer from the setup but leaves server maintenance to you.

For a continuous prerecorded stream, compare whether the approach can loop and order videos unattended, what happens if the connection drops, how much local or server upkeep it needs, which destinations it supports, and the full recurring or hardware cost. No independent comparative testing establishes which candidate uses the least CPU or is most reliable.

Best options for a continuous YouTube playlist

  1. StreamNeo — best first option for cloud playlist playout. It keeps an uploaded playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo.
  2. Gyre or Upstream — other cloud candidates to evaluate. YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. These are descriptions in YouTube’s directory, not independent performance tests. Confirm current plan limits, playlist controls, recovery behavior, and pricing with each provider before choosing.
  3. FFmpeg on a VPS or server — best for a technical, self-managed setup. A headless server can avoid keeping a desktop PC running, but the operator is responsible for server configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and recovery. The available supporting description is limited, so verify the implementation details before relying on it for an unattended channel.
  4. StreamYard or Restream — for live shows, guests, and distribution rather than automatic playlist looping. StreamYard’s vendor-authored comparison focuses on browser-based guest shows and production; Restream describes a browser studio and multistreaming. Their show and distribution features do not establish purpose-built, unattended prerecorded playlist automation.
  5. AJA HELO Plus — a dedicated hardware route. YouTube’s encoder directory describes it as a standalone H.264 encoder whose PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized appliance; compare its total hardware cost and features with a cloud service for your actual needs.

Why a cloud service is the simplest fit

A cloud playout service moves the always-on part of the job off your personal computer. Upload a recording or assemble a playlist, provide the YouTube stream key, and let the provider send the stream. This is the most direct fit if the goal is to keep prerecorded material running without managing a server or leaving a home PC on.

Set up a continuous prerecorded stream safely

  1. Confirm YouTube Live is enabled. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete this ahead of the planned start, rather than assuming a new channel can go live immediately.
  2. Choose a method that matches your maintenance appetite. Use a cloud playout service to avoid a machine you maintain; use a VPS and encoder only if you are comfortable configuring and monitoring a server. A browser studio is a better fit when a person is producing a show than when a playlist must run unattended.
  3. Prepare the videos and playlist. Check the order, playback continuity, and whether you have rights to stream every item. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not certify a video as copyright-safe. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules, especially for reused material, before scheduling a long-running stream.
  4. Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its stream key into the chosen service or encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. Interface labels can change, so use the current Live Control Room labels shown for your account.
  5. Test before relying on unattended playback. Start with a private or unlisted stream and check the video, audio, playlist order, and whether playback continues after the operator’s computer is disconnected. Confirm what the service or server does after a dropped connection; do not assume that a successful initial start proves automatic recovery.
  6. Plan for archives and recordings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream planned to run longer, check YouTube’s current behavior and make an independent recording plan if you need a complete archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

What to check before committing

  • Playlist control: Verify whether the provider supports the ordering and looping behavior your channel needs, and how edits to a playlist take effect.
  • Failure recovery: Check what happens after a YouTube disconnect, a provider interruption, or a server restart. A tool’s stated use case alone is not proof of recovery performance.
  • Formats and limits: Confirm accepted file formats, storage limits, stream settings, and any plan restrictions directly with the provider. Exact current limits for Gyre and Upstream are not established here.
  • Destination count: This article concerns YouTube. Confirm any additional destination support directly if it matters to your workflow; do not assume a YouTube-focused playlist feature sends to other platforms.
  • Total cost: Compare recurring service charges with VPS or hardware costs, plus the time required for configuration, monitoring, and maintenance. Current costs for the other services and the AJA appliance are not established here.
  • Rights and channel rules: Streaming a file continuously does not grant permission to use its music or footage, nor guarantee monetization. Check rights and YouTube’s current rules for the material and channel.

Common problems and what to check

  • The channel cannot go live yet: If this is the first time enabling YouTube Live, activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it early and wait for the account’s live capability before troubleshooting the encoder.
  • The stream fails to connect: Check that the selected YouTube stream and stream key match, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder or service is configured for the intended YouTube destination. Never share the key publicly.
  • The stream stops when you close the laptop: The current workflow depends on software running on that laptop. Move playout to a cloud service or an always-on server if the stream must continue after the laptop shuts down.
  • A playlist does not loop or resume as expected: Check the provider’s playlist and recovery controls, then test the sequence on a private or unlisted stream. Do not infer unattended loop or failover support from a general “live streaming” label.
  • The archive is incomplete: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; for longer sessions, verify the current platform behavior and arrange separate recording if completeness matters.
  • The stream is live but raises a rights or monetization concern: Review permissions for every video and YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules. An encoder or cloud service cannot establish that content is authorized or eligible for monetization.

Sources and scope

YouTube’s verified encoder directory defines encoders and lists vendor-described use cases for Gyre, Upstream, and AJA HELO Plus. YouTube notes that products in its directory are not made by YouTube, so evaluate vendors independently. For production workflows, see Restream’s streaming software guide and StreamYard’s comparison; both are vendor-authored. A search-result description from iTechGuides, dated October 3, 2026, characterizes FFmpeg on a Linux VPS as a direct headless route, but the article itself was not available for verification. No independent CPU, setup-time, uptime, or reliability comparison is established by these sources.
