Sky Stream is the best premium all-rounder, NOW is the most flexible standalone choice, EE TV and Virgin Media suit broadband bundles, and Freely is the best free-to-air internet option. This guide covers licensed services only. Anonymous “all-channel” IPTV subscriptions and pre-loaded streaming devices are excluded because they may distribute content without permission and can expose buyers to fraud, malware and service shutdowns.
Prices and packages change frequently. The figures below are current indications from provider pages checked in 2026, not 2025 prices. Confirm the total contract cost, availability and package contents at checkout.
What IPTV means in the UK
Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is television delivered through an internet connection rather than solely by terrestrial broadcast, satellite or cable. Ofcom notes that internet-delivered channels may appear inside or outside a regulated electronic programme guide; services reached through unregulated links do not necessarily receive the same protections as channels on a regulated EPG. See Ofcom’s IPTV guidance.

- Illegal IPTV: unauthorised services selling premium channels, films or sport through anonymous apps, M3U playlists or “fully loaded” devices.
The right service depends on the channels and competitions you actually watch, your broadband, device setup, contract tolerance and total cost—not on a claimed channel count.

Best overall premium experience: Sky Stream
Sky Stream is the strongest choice for viewers who want a conventional TV-guide experience, Sky Atlantic and Sky Originals without installing a satellite dish. Its puck connects to the television by HDMI and streams over Wi-Fi or wired internet. Sky’s current page lists Essential TV at £15 per month for new customers on a 24-month minimum term, or a £18 rolling offer; the page also shows a £21 standard rolling price. Ultimate TV is listed at £24 per month for new customers on 24 months, with a stated £38 rolling price. Offers can change, so treat these as dated signals rather than guarantees (Sky Stream).
What you get
Essential includes Sky Atlantic, Netflix Standard with Ads and discovery+. Ultimate adds more Sky channels and services including Disney+, HBO Max and selected Hayu content. Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, TNT Sports, Kids and UHD options are additional decisions rather than automatic inclusions.
Trade-offs
- A 24-month promotion can cost less initially but limits flexibility and may revert to a higher price.
- Sport, cinema and UHD can materially increase the monthly bill.
- Sky recommends at least 25 Mbps for Sky Stream; relevant UHD/HDR use has a 30 Mbps stated requirement. Actual Wi-Fi performance can be lower.
- Sky says a household can use up to six Sky Stream Pucks and supports up to three Sky Glass TVs, subject to current account rules.
The Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Pack is currently shown at £6 per month on a 31-day rolling basis. Not every programme is available in UHD or HDR, and you need compatible hardware and broadband (Sky technical details).

- 【Powerful 6nm Platform Performance】Powered by a 64-bit 6nm high-performance platform, featuring a quad-core A55 CPU (up to 2.5GHz) and large memory (2GB + 32GB), it ensures smooth operation.
- 【High-Speed Wi-Fi 6 Connectivity】Supports Wi-Fi 6 (requires a Wi-Fi 6-enabled router), utilizing OFDMA and MU-MIMO technologies to provide greater bandwidth and significantly improved transmission speeds, enabling instant playback of online content.
- 【Smart Google TV Entertainment Center】Built-in Google TV integrates personalized recommendations for movies, shows, and more from various apps and subscriptions, along with powerful cross-app search for a customized entertainment experience.
- 【Convenient Voice Control】Use the voice button on the 360° Bluetooth remote to use Google Assistant for voice search, playback control, and smart home management. Easily cast content from your phone/tablet to the TV via Google Cast. Easy to install.
Best flexible standalone service: NOW
NOW is the practical option when you want selected Sky entertainment, films or sport without taking a full Sky TV platform or Sky broadband. Memberships are bought separately: the current listings show Entertainment at £7.99 per month, Entertainment & HBO Max at £9.99, Cinema at £9.99, Sports at £34.99 and a 24-hour Sports Day Membership at £14.99 (NOW memberships).
When NOW makes sense
- Use Entertainment or Cinema for a defined period, then cancel a rolling membership.
- Use a Sports Day Membership for occasional events rather than paying a full month.
- Choose a longer minimum-term offer only after comparing its full term with rolling pricing.
Important limitations
Sports rights are expensive for regular viewers, and the catalogue depends on the membership. Boost or Ultra Boost may be needed for more devices, higher resolution or ad-free on-demand playback. NOW’s terms give connection guidance of 2.5 Mbps generally, 12 Mbps for selected 1080p content with Boost and 30 Mbps for selected 4K HDR content with Ultra Boost (NOW terms). Supported devices and simultaneous-stream limits can change, so check the current help pages for your television, streaming stick, console or mobile device.
Best flexible broadband-and-TV bundle: EE TV
EE TV is aimed at households taking EE broadband as well as television. It combines live channels with services such as NOW, Netflix, HBO Max and Apple TV, plus sports options, in a single TV interface. Current EE offers show Full Fibre 100 with Entertainment at £48.99 per month on a 24-month contract, while another Full Fibre 500 offer is shown at £38.99; the exact figure depends on location, speed, package and promotion (EE TV, EE broadband and TV).
Some flexible TV packages can be changed monthly during the minimum term. That does not make the broadband contract rolling: compare the broadband, TV, equipment and scheduled price increases as one contract. EE is poor value if you do not need its broadband.

Best large bundle: Virgin Media TV, Stream and Flex
Virgin Media suits households inside the network footprint that prefer one set-top-box-style bundle for broadband, entertainment, films and sport. Flex is described as offering 150+ essential channels, with premium channel packs and streaming subscriptions that can be added or removed every 30 days (Virgin Media TV).
A current page illustrates the pricing risk: Mega TV with Sky Cinema, Sky Sports in HD and M500 broadband is shown at £78.99 per month for 24 months, rising to a stated £195 from month 25. That is an example bundle, not a universal tariff. Check your address, new-customer status and post-term price before ordering.
Best free option: Freely and official broadcaster apps
Freely delivers public-service and free-to-air content over broadband on compatible televisions and devices. It can reduce reliance on an aerial where the setup supports it, but it is not a replacement for premium sport, Sky Originals or a full paid channel catalogue. Device support, channel availability and guide treatment must be checked on the current service information. Ofcom’s connected-TV work and the government’s EPG statement provide context (government EPG statement).
For the lowest paid cost, combine BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5 apps with only the NOW or other memberships you need. The compromise is managing several apps instead of one unified guide.

True first-year cost = monthly price × months + activation or equipment charges + mandatory broadband − confirmed discounts.
Record these fields for every quote:
- Introductory monthly price and how long it lasts.
- Minimum term and cancellation notice.
- Standard price after promotion and price after the minimum term.
- Whether broadband is mandatory and what portion of the bill it represents.
- Sports, cinema, HD, UHD, Dolby Atmos, multiroom and ad-free upgrades.
- Equipment delivery, activation and return obligations.
A £15 Sky Stream TV offer cannot be compared directly with a £48.99 EE broadband-and-TV bundle until the broadband component and contract obligations are identified.

Broadband
Sky Stream, NOW and Freely can work over suitable third-party broadband. EE TV’s main proposition is tied to EE broadband, and Virgin’s principal bundles depend on Virgin Media network availability. A fast advertised line does not guarantee smooth playback: Wi-Fi distance, router placement, congestion, concurrent downloads and the television’s wireless hardware all matter.

Devices
Check the provider’s current compatibility list for your smart-TV operating system, Apple TV or Android TV box, Fire TV or other stick, games console, phone and tablet. Confirm whether a dedicated box is included or loaned, whether an HDMI port is required, how many simultaneous streams are allowed and whether multiroom costs extra. Platform support changes more often than prices.
Quality
HD, 4K UHD, HDR and Dolby Atmos may require separate packs, compatible content and hardware. An advertised 4K plan does not mean every channel or programme is delivered in 4K.
Is IPTV legal in the UK?
IPTV itself is legal; the key question is whether the provider has rights to distribute the content. The UK government says streaming devices are lawful for legitimate free-to-air use but become illegal when adapted to provide unauthorised subscription films, programmes or sport (government guidance). FACT warns that boxes, USB sticks, apps and add-ons can be configured for unlawful streaming (FACT advice).
Warning signs
- “10,000 channels”, “all sports” or lifetime access for a tiny fee.
- No identifiable licensed company, rights information, terms or refund address.
- Payment by cryptocurrency, bank transfer or private message.
- A preconfigured Fire TV Stick, Android box, unknown APK, Kodi add-on or M3U playlist.
- Premium UK channels offered without a transparent package or official signup page.
If a cheap service stops working, likely causes include rights-holder blocking, a shutdown, overloaded servers, a vanished domain, payment termination or malware. Do not hunt for another pirate reseller; move to an official broadcaster app or licensed service. Virgin Media also identifies selling, advertising, possessing or using illicit devices to bypass encryption as prohibited (Virgin Media policy).

In the UK, watching live television broadcasts or using BBC iPlayer generally creates TV-licensing obligations. The obligation depends on what you watch, not simply on owning a smart TV or streaming stick. NOW states that a licence is needed for its box or Smart Stick when using BBC iPlayer, including live, on-demand and catch-up content (NOW TV-licence guidance). Check the current official TV Licensing rules before publication or purchase.
Buying checklist
- List the exact channels, competitions, films and originals you need.
- Check whether each item is live, catch-up, included, an add-on or available only through another app.
- Confirm broadband availability and expected speed at the television.
- Calculate the first-year and post-promotion cost, including mandatory broadband.
- Check minimum term, cancellation notice, annual increases and equipment returns.
- Confirm device compatibility, simultaneous streams, multiroom and HDMI requirements.
- Verify HD, UHD, HDR, Dolby Atmos and advert-tier conditions.
- Use the provider’s official signup page; reject “lifetime” and “all-channel” offers.
Verdict
Choose Sky Stream for the most polished premium TV experience and Sky-led content. Choose NOW when rolling memberships or a one-day sports pass matter more than a unified set-top-box interface. Choose EE TV if you already want EE broadband and a changeable TV bundle, and Virgin Media if its network and a large bundle fit your household. Choose Freely plus official broadcaster apps when free-to-air viewing is enough. In every case, judge the licensed rights, total contract cost and technical requirements—not a reseller’s channel count.
