In a 2024 warning, the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) reported that more than 80% of 128 costumes aimed at children under seven failed basic safety tests. Those were targeted online-marketplace purchases tested in June 2024, not a representative sample of the wider costume market; the warning’s table was corrected on November 7, 2024. The finding is a reason to inspect a specific costume, not a failure rate for all costumes. Read the OPSS warning and sample caveat.
What safety checks should I make before the outing?
- Fit: Make sure clothing does not drag and your child can move freely without tripping or catching it on objects.
- Labels: CPSC advises looking for flame-resistant labels. Health Canada cautions that “flame resistant” does not mean fire-proof; read its Halloween safety guidance.
- Mask or face covering: If using a mask, check that it fits, permits ventilation, and leaves vision clear. The AAP suggests non-toxic makeup or a decorative hat as alternatives.
- Shoes and props: Choose well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Skip sharp or long props that could injure someone or make movement harder.
- Visibility: Add reflective details where they can be seen, particularly if the child will be out around dusk or after dark.
These checks matter beyond a single costume style. CPSC’s Halloween guidance, dated October 31, 2012, reported more than 3,500 Halloween-related injuries between October and November in the prior year, including burns, lacerations, falls, and collisions. That is a historical figure from the release’s reporting context, not a current annual estimate.
