This guide helps you choose among horror, thrillers, science fiction and lighter seasonal viewing by considering scare intensity, genre and how closely each film is tied to Halloween.
What counts as a Halloween movie?
Not every seasonal pick takes place on Halloween. Teen Vogue’s Halloween list, for example, includes films chosen for their atmosphere as well as stories connected to the holiday. That distinction is useful when choosing: a film can feel right for an October night without featuring trick-or-treating, costumes or October 31 in its plot. Teen Vogue’s list also illustrates the range of titles commonly grouped under the label.
Choose by the kind of night you want
For psychological tension
If you want dread and unsettling ideas more than a straightforward monster story, consider The Babadook. Teen Vogue describes it as a psychological thriller about a recently widowed woman and her son whose lives change after a mysterious book appears. The description is the publisher’s synopsis, not a claim about current streaming availability.
For horror, science fiction or a lighter watch
Seasonal recommendations cover more than one kind of scare. Paramount+’s Halloween selections include horror, science fiction and family viewing, while Netflix Tudum organizes its suggestions by scare level. Those collections can help you find a mood, but neither is a universal guide to every film or service. Paramount+’s Halloween collection and Netflix Tudum’s Halloween recommendations are useful starting points.

How to pick a film that suits your group
- Agree on scare intensity. A psychological thriller, science-fiction horror film and family-oriented seasonal movie can deliver very different experiences. Use a service’s scare-level labels as a starting point, not a promise that everyone will find a film equally frightening.
- Check the age suitability. Look up the film’s rating and content details for your country before choosing for children or a mixed-age group; the recommendation pages may cover titles intended for very different audiences.
- Decide how Halloween-specific it should be. If the holiday setting matters, check the synopsis. If mood is enough, broaden the search to atmospheric horror and thrillers that are not literally about Halloween.
- Confirm where it is available locally. Streaming catalogs vary by region and change over time. Check the title in the service you plan to use before movie night rather than relying on an older recommendation or a different country’s catalog.
Where to check availability
Seasonal platform guides show what a particular service is highlighting, not every place a film can be watched. Paramount+’s collection and Netflix Tudum’s recommendations are service-specific editorial picks. A title appearing in a guide does not establish that it is currently included with a subscription in your region; check the service’s local listing for the film and the terms shown there.
For a broader list of classic and newer seasonal picks, see Teen Vogue’s Halloween movie guide. Its title and numbering may change, so treat it as a recommendation list rather than a fixed, definitive set of 64 films.
