For a NAS-based, self-hosted broadcast, OBS Studio is the most practical alternative to Gyre: mount or otherwise expose the NAS files to a computer running OBS, set a file or playlist source to loop, and send the output to a YouTube live event. The computer must stay on and connected while it broadcasts. If you want the stream hosted in the cloud instead, StreamNeo is the first service to consider: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube without keeping a home computer running.

First decide whether you want local playback or a YouTube broadcast

Looping a playlist on a device connected to your NAS is not the same as broadcasting that playlist as a YouTube Live stream. For a broadcast, an encoder must send video to a configured YouTube live event; simply playing media through a home media server does not establish that connection. YouTube’s guidance explains the live-stream setup at Stream across platforms.

  • To watch or organize media locally: a media server such as Jellyfin may be a better fit.
  • To mirror a YouTube playlist into a local media library: Youtarr documents a workflow for downloading selected playlist videos and syncing server playlists.
  • To broadcast NAS files as YouTube Live: use OBS on a computer that can access the files, or use a cloud service that accepts uploaded videos.

Best options for this NAS-to-YouTube use case

Option What it does Best fit Main trade-off
StreamNeo Cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube. You want an always-on YouTube stream without leaving a computer running at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than reading files directly from your NAS; you need to upload the media and provide your YouTube stream key.
OBS Studio Plays a local file or playlist and encodes the output for a YouTube live event. You want control over a self-hosted setup and have a computer able to access the NAS. The encoder computer, NAS connection and internet connection need to remain available while streaming.
Gyre Its vendor describes uploading files to Gyre Storage, creating a looping playlist and scheduling a stream. You want a service-hosted workflow similar to Gyre’s documented offering. Features and plans are vendor-controlled and may change; the available documentation does not establish a comparative reliability, image-quality or total-cost advantage.
Jellyfin Self-hosted media library and live-TV functionality. You want to organize and play media locally, or use documented live-TV inputs. The documentation does not establish a direct workflow for broadcasting a NAS playlist continuously to YouTube Live.
Youtarr with a media server Downloads selected YouTube playlist videos and synchronizes playlists to Plex, Jellyfin or Emby; it also documents an M3U fallback. You want a playlist mirrored into a local library. Its documentation does not describe it as an encoder that publishes a continuous YouTube live stream.

StreamNeo is #1 among cloud options here because it keeps uploaded videos running on YouTube from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and offers a free first day. It does not connect to a NAS share directly: transfer the files first.

Set up OBS to loop NAS media to YouTube Live

OBS documents Media Source for looping a single file and VLC Video for playing a playlist. Its instructions do not specifically validate any NAS model or long-running NAS broadcast, so first confirm that the computer running OBS can read the files reliably.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Make the NAS files accessible to the encoder computer. Mount the NAS share or use another supported way to expose its media files to the computer running OBS. Test that the files open from that computer before configuring the stream. The appropriate share setup depends on your NAS and operating system.
  2. Install OBS Studio on the encoder computer. OBS documents support for Windows, macOS and Linux. Required CPU resources vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; there is no single hardware figure that guarantees suitable performance. See OBS system requirements.
  3. Choose the right source in OBS.
    • For one video, add a Media Source, browse to the file on the accessible NAS share and enable Loop.
    • For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, add the media paths in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed for this source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

  4. Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live event and obtain its stream key. The channel must be verified and have live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take at least 24 hours after the request; check the event and channel status before your planned start.
  5. Connect OBS to the event and start the encoder. Use the event’s stream key in OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration, confirm the preview is correct, then start streaming from OBS. Check YouTube Studio to confirm that the event receives the encoder feed, and start or schedule the event there as appropriate.
  6. Keep the setup running. The computer must stay awake, connected to the NAS and online. Prevent sleep or shutdown during the broadcast, and consider what should happen after a power, network or NAS interruption. The workflow depends on those components being available; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

For a playlist sourced from YouTube, do not assume that downloading or rebroadcasting it is permitted. Check the rights, YouTube terms and the content owner’s permission before using the material.

What OBS can and cannot replace

OBS is the strongest documented self-hosted choice when the goal is to read files accessible from a NAS and send them as a live broadcast. The loop settings are documented, but NAS-specific compatibility and long-duration reliability are not established by those instructions.

Gyre’s vendor describes a cloud workflow: upload files to Gyre Storage, build a playlist, schedule a stream and let the playlist restart. That removes the need for a home computer to act as encoder, but it is a service workflow rather than direct playback from your NAS. Check Gyre’s current product page for current terms and features; do not infer comparative uptime, quality or cost from the workflow description alone.

Jellyfin’s introduction and live-TV documentation cover a personal media server and supported live-TV inputs, including M3U. Youtarr’s media server playlist documentation covers playlist mirroring. Neither source establishes a turnkey replacement for an encoder that continuously sends NAS media to YouTube Live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuing YouTube stream rather than keeping the NAS itself as the playback source, StreamNeo avoids the always-on home encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded videos, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot handles uploaded media up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; plans differ by billing length, not features.

Monthly: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input, and you must upload the NAS files before use. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
