The best genuinely free way to loop prerecorded video on YouTube Live is OBS Studio on a computer you can leave running. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube supplies the stream URL and key that connect it to your channel. The trade-off is that your computer, encoder, and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast to continue.
If you want the stream to keep running without a computer at home, a cloud service is the alternative—but it may not be free. StreamNeo is one option: it runs uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, and its first day is free with no card. Details are below.
Free ways to keep a YouTube livestream running
| Option | Cost | Where the stream runs | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio on a local computer | OBS is free; electricity, internet, and hardware may still cost money. | Your computer sends the feed directly to YouTube. | No encoder subscription, but the computer and connection must remain available. |
| StreamNeo cloud hosting | First day free with no card; paid durations are available. | StreamNeo’s cloud runs uploaded videos to YouTube. | Does not require a home computer to stay on, but it is a paid service after the free day. |
| Other cloud-hosted studios | Check the provider’s current prices and limits. | Provider-managed servers. | Avoids keeping a local computer running, but adds a third party and costs or reliability should not be assumed. YouTube lists Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams; its cited guidance does not establish current pricing or reliability. |
For a free setup, start with OBS. If you compare hosted services, check recurring cost, source-video sequencing, interruption recovery, service limits, and how YouTube archives are handled. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a reliability or value ranking for other providers.
Check channel eligibility first
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance states that users must be at least 16. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before your intended broadcast. Rules and interface behavior can change; consult YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder setup guidance.

Set up a free local loop with OBS
This setup uses OBS to send a video feed from your computer to YouTube Live. YouTube’s documented encoder connection uses a server URL and stream key. OBS’s current menu labels and repeat or playlist controls can vary by version; use the current OBS interface and help materials rather than assuming a particular click sequence.
- Prepare your source video or playlist. Make sure the files are accessible to the computer that will run OBS, and decide the order in which they should play. Use OBS media sources or playlist-capable source options in the version you have, and enable repeat/loop playback where that source provides it. Confirm that playback returns to the beginning or advances to the next item as intended before you start a long broadcast.
- Enable and create the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s streaming settings, select the YouTube service or a custom destination as appropriate for the current build, then enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its stream settings help. Keep the key private; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public or going live. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says you must also go live in Live Control Room after the feed starts.
- Test the full loop and monitor it. Check video, audio, source transitions, and playback on the intended watch page and devices. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring during an event. A local stream depends on the computer, OBS, and internet connection remaining available; an interruption at any of those points can stop the feed.
OBS is free and open source. The OBS Project Help Portal explains that it sends the stream directly from the computer to the destination; consult the OBS Help Portal for current software documentation.

Plan for a long broadcast and its replay
A continuous live broadcast and its archive are not the same thing. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an around-the-clock stream will become one guaranteed, permanent replay. Decide whether you need an archive, check the current YouTube guidance for your stream arrangement, and plan around that limit.
YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. YouTube also cautions that lower latency can bring more playback buffering; if the broadcast is prerecorded and you are not interacting with viewers, lower latency may matter less. Review the settings in YouTube’s live-stream settings help.

Protect your channel and use content you can broadcast
Looping a recording does not exempt it from copyright or YouTube policy. Only stream footage, music, narration, photographs, and other material you have the rights or permission to broadcast. YouTube says livestreams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and its stream settings include rights-management controls. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and stream settings.
Test and troubleshoot before leaving it running
YouTube’s encoder tips recommend setting up at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are operational recommendations, not requirements for every stream. Use the extra time to catch problems before viewers arrive.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is streaming, the destination URL and stream key are correct, and the channel’s live-stream access is enabled. Keep the key private; reset it if you suspect it has been compromised.
- Scheduled event does not go live: Starting the OBS feed may not be enough. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- Video stops or the broadcast drops: On a local setup, check whether the computer slept, OBS stopped, a source file became unavailable, or the internet connection failed. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; a local encoder requires local equipment and connectivity to remain available.
- The loop ends or does not advance: Recheck the source’s repeat or playlist behavior in your OBS version, confirm every media file is accessible, and run through a complete cycle before relying on it for a long stream.
- Viewers report buffering: Check the connection and stream preview. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering, so consider whether that setting serves a prerecorded, non-interactive broadcast.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check whether the stream ran for 12 hours or longer. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not as a guarantee of a single archive for an around-the-clock event.
Or let it run in the cloud

- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming.
