Recommended Free Tools
OBS Studio is the best free starting point for most podcast creators who want to stream on YouTube from a computer: it is free, open source, works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and gives you control over scenes and audio. For the simplest solo setup, YouTube’s built-in webcam option avoids installing a separate studio. For interviews with remote guests, a browser studio such as StreamYard may simplify the on-screen workflow, but its free plan has notable limits.
The desktop workflows below are the same for creators in India as elsewhere; the official YouTube guidance cited here does not specify a separate India-only encoder requirement. Check your channel’s Live Control Room for its current eligibility and feature access.
Choose a tool for the kind of podcast stream you want
| Tool | Best fit | What it offers | Free-plan or setup consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Solo shows, audio-led episodes, or productions needing scene and audio control | Free, open-source desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux; supports scenes, audio mixing, webcams and images. OBS Project | You configure the scenes, sources and stream connection yourself. |
| YouTube webcam | A simple solo talk with minimal production needs | Go live through YouTube without installing a separate streaming studio. YouTube provides webcam and encoder routes. YouTube encoder setup | Less suited to a show that needs a composed multi-source scene or detailed audio mixing. |
| StreamYard | Hosted conversations where a browser-based guest workflow is useful | A browser studio that can connect to a YouTube channel. Connect a YouTube channel | Its free plan caps streaming and recording hours; excludes multistreaming, custom RTMP destinations, automatic stream recording, prerecorded live streaming and downloads, and displays StreamYard branding. Free-plan limits |
For a solo audio-led podcast, start with OBS if you want control, or YouTube webcam if keeping setup simple matters more. A browser studio can be more convenient for a remote guest, but review the free-plan restrictions before building a show around it. These recommendations follow the documented features; they are not claims of comparative hands-on testing.
Check YouTube eligibility before installing anything
YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling a channel’s first live stream can take up to 24 hours. These requirements apply to going live from a computer; check the channel’s Live Control Room for its status. YouTube live-streaming requirements

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The YouTube mobile-app route has a separate subscriber threshold: at least 50 subscribers, along with a verified channel, no recent live restriction and live streaming enabled. Do not apply that mobile threshold to computer streaming with OBS or YouTube webcam. YouTube mobile live-streaming requirements
Set up a podcast stream with OBS Studio
- Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project. It supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and is free and open source. Download it from the OBS Project.
- Build a scene for the episode. Add the sources your format needs, such as a webcam, image, or other visual. For an audio-led show, a clear still image or simple camera shot can keep the video side straightforward.
- Set up and check audio. Connect your microphone or other audio source, then use OBS’s audio mixing controls to confirm the correct input is active and that speech is audible without clipping. YouTube identifies microphones as typical external encoder hardware; an external microphone is optional, and no specific model is evaluated here. YouTube encoder setup
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to connect OBS. Treat the stream key as private: do not show it in the video, screenshots or a guest’s view. Use YouTube’s own setup guidance for the current connection flow. YouTube encoder setup
- Test before the episode. Start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, and confirm the picture and audio before you announce or begin the show. YouTube recommends testing the stream, monitoring audio and video, and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. YouTube streaming tips
- Allow setup time for a scheduled event. YouTube’s tips recommend preparing the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. That leaves time to spot a connection or audio problem while the audience is not yet waiting. YouTube streaming tips
Gear and bandwidth: what you actually need
You do not need to buy a particular camera or microphone to start: YouTube supports encoder workflows with external audio or video hardware, but gear is optional. For a podcast, an external microphone can be a useful upgrade if your built-in audio is not clear; choose based on your room and connection rather than assuming a specific model is required.

Use an internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream and some headroom. YouTube cautions that the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor both audio and video during a test rather than relying on a speed-test result alone. YouTube streaming tips
Common problems and practical fixes
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, recent live restrictions and whether live streaming is enabled. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube live-streaming requirements
- The stream does not appear in YouTube’s preview: confirm OBS is connected using the current encoder instructions and that you selected the intended stream in Live Control Room. Check the preview before going ahead. YouTube encoder setup
- Audio is missing or wrong: verify the intended microphone or audio input is selected in OBS, then speak during a test and monitor the result in the preview.
- Video or audio keeps breaking up: check that upload bandwidth has headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, then test again and monitor the preview. YouTube’s stated ceiling is that total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. YouTube streaming tips
- You want to go live from the phone app but cannot: check the mobile route’s separate threshold and eligibility conditions; they are not the desktop encoder requirements. YouTube mobile live-streaming requirements
- A planned interview or playback workflow is blocked on StreamYard’s free plan: check its listed free-plan limits, including unavailable prerecorded live streaming and multistreaming, before choosing it for that format. StreamYard free-plan limits
