A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11OBS Studio is the best-documented free starting point if you want to record or stream with a green-screen effect already applied. Its Chroma Key filter works with scenes on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction. If you would rather add the effect while editing recorded footage, Microsoft Clipchamp offers a timeline-based alternative. Neither option has been established here as producing a cleaner key than the other; choose by workflow and available controls.
Which free green-screen recorder should you choose?
| Tool | Best fit | Where the effect is applied | Documented controls | Free-plan notes | Platform fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Recording or live production with a composed scene of sources such as a webcam, screen capture, images, or text. | On a source within an OBS scene, before or during recording or streaming. | Key color, similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction. | OBS describes the software as free and open source. | Windows, macOS, and Linux; check current requirements before installing. |
| Microsoft Clipchamp | Recording footage first, then placing it over replacement footage or an image in an editor. | On the editing timeline. | Screen-color selection and a threshold slider. | Free users have a limited selection of green-screen stock footage and templates. Microsoft says all users can save in 1080p; all green-screen stock and templates require an upgrade. | Browser-based editor and Windows app. Access and entitlements can depend on account type. |
The distinctions in this table describe documented features and workflows, not a hands-on comparison of key quality, performance, or ease of use. OBS’s official product page calls it “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” OBS Studio Clipchamp’s feature documentation describes removing green, red, or blue from footage and replacing it with another video or image. OBS Studio: key a source while recording
Set up the scene and source
- Install OBS Studio from its official site and open it. OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; consult the current download page for release and operating-system requirements, which may change.
- Create or select a scene. Add the material you want to record, such as a screen capture, and add your webcam as a source. OBS supports sources including window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards.
- Arrange the sources so the keyed webcam image sits above the replacement background in the scene. Confirm that the camera image is visible and that your green-screen background fills the area behind you.
- Apply the Chroma Key filter to the webcam source. OBS documents the filter for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its controls include key color, similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction.
- Preview the scene and adjust the filter against your own lighting and footage. Similarity removes more of the selected color as it increases, but setting it too high can remove pixels you meant to keep. Tune smoothness and spill reduction while watching the preview rather than assuming one setting works for every setup.
- When the result looks acceptable, start recording in OBS. If you also plan to stream, configure the stream destination and its stream key separately; do not share the key, which grants access to your broadcast.
Get a usable background before tuning
A purchased green screen is optional. Microsoft says chroma-key footage can use green, red, or blue material, or a painted wall. Avoid creases and shadows, and provide plenty of natural or artificial light. If you already have a smooth, evenly lit surface, you may not need to buy a backdrop.
Clipchamp: add the effect during editing
- Open Clipchamp in a browser or its Windows app and start an editing project. Account access and plan entitlements can vary, so check what is available for your Microsoft account.
- Import the foreground footage recorded against a green, blue, or red background, along with a replacement video or image.
- Place the replacement footage or image on a lower timeline layer, then place the screen footage on the layer above it.
- Select the screen footage and apply the green-screen effect. Choose the matching screen color and adjust the threshold slider while previewing the composite.
- Check the subject’s edges and any remaining background color in the preview, then export when the result is satisfactory. Microsoft says saving at 1080p is available to all users; the free plan includes only a limited selection of green-screen stock footage and templates.
How to choose between OBS and Clipchamp
- Choose OBS if you want the effect in a scene as you record or stream, or need a scene-based setup with multiple sources.
- Choose Clipchamp if your priority is an editing timeline where you layer a completed recording over replacement footage and adjust the key afterward.
- Consider control needs: OBS documents similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction; Clipchamp documents screen-color selection and threshold adjustment.
- Check access before committing: OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux, while Clipchamp is browser based and also has a Windows app. Clipchamp access and plan entitlements can depend on account type. Check current system requirements and account access.
These are workflow-based recommendations, not a claim that either tool is easier or produces a better-looking result for every setup.

Optional setup costs
You do not necessarily need to buy a backdrop: a suitable painted wall or existing smooth fabric may work. If you need a surface, a green-screen backdrop or fabric is an optional purchase. Even lighting and avoiding folds and shadows matter to the footage you give the keying tool.
