For a file already on your computer, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops the input indefinitely. Put it before that file’s -i, use -re to read the file at real-time pace, map the intended audio and video streams, and send the output to YouTube over RTMPS. Whether to copy the existing codecs or transcode them depends on compatibility with YouTube’s current ingest settings.

Before you start: channel access and source files

YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a streamer at least 16 years old to live stream. Check the current YouTube live-streaming prerequisites and create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room so you can obtain its ingest details.

  • Install FFmpeg and check the build with ffmpeg -version. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, so if an option behaves differently on your machine, check ffmpeg -h full for your installed build.
  • Have a source video with the sleep sound and visual you want, or prepare separate audio and visual inputs.
  • Use audio and visuals you have permission to stream. The sources cited here do not establish how YouTube will treat a particular sleep-sound stream for copyright or monetization; do not assume that a sound being ambient or a stream being continuous makes it rights-cleared.
  • Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in a script repository, paste it into a public forum, or share it in a screenshot.

Basic script: loop a video that already contains the sound

This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested universal command. It transcodes the source to H.264 video and AAC audio, then sends it to an RTMPS destination. Replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the values provided for your YouTube stream.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "sleep-scene.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -g 60 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  1. Loop the input: -stream_loop -1 means infinite input looping. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so place this option before the relevant -i.
  2. Read at live pace: -re reads the file at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). It is useful when a file is being sent as a live stream. FFmpeg cautions against low read rates with actual capture devices or live streams because packets may be lost.
  3. Select the intended tracks: -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 explicitly chooses the first video and first audio stream from the input. Change the mapping if the sound is on a different track or the file has no video.
  4. Encode for delivery: -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac transcode the selected streams. -pix_fmt yuv420p, -b:a 128k, and -ar 44100 are example settings, not universal requirements. Choose settings that match your source, desired quality, connection, and YouTube’s current guidance.
  5. Set keyframes in relation to frame rate: -g 60 is a two-second GOP only at 30 fps. Select the output frame rate and GOP together; the command does not set an output frame rate explicitly.
  6. Send to the ingest destination: -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style workflow. Use the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your stream.

Put a real key in a protected environment variable or secret store rather than committing it directly into a script. The command’s placeholder URL is illustrative; use the actual RTMPS endpoint and key YouTube provides for the stream.

Choose stream copy or transcoding

There are two main ways to handle the media after looping. FFmpeg stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if the source codecs or properties do not fit the output container or destination. Transcoding gives you more control over codec, size, frame rate, and filters, but consumes compute and can affect quality.

Approach Use when Trade-off
Stream copy The existing audio and video streams are compatible with the chosen output and YouTube’s current ingest requirements, and you do not need filtering or resizing. Low processing overhead and no re-encoding loss; incompatible source/container combinations can prevent delivery, and filtering is unavailable.
Transcode You need to change a codec or output property, apply a filter, resize, or make the format fit the destination. More format control, but requires processing capacity and may change image or sound quality.

Do not switch to stream copy merely to reduce CPU use without confirming compatibility. Conversely, do not transcode automatically if the source already meets the destination’s requirements and no conversion is needed. FFmpeg explains these trade-offs in its documentation.

Looping a separate audio file with a visual

For sleep audio in a separate file, provide a visual stream as well if your YouTube workflow expects one. The right setup depends on your assets and whether you want a still image, a gently moving scene, or a video. A complete audio-only-to-YouTube command cannot be specified without knowing the visual source and output requirements.

  • One file with both sound and image: use the basic command and map the correct tracks.
  • Separate audio and video files: loop and pace the inputs as needed, then explicitly map the audio from its input and the video from the visual input. Confirm the stream indexes with FFmpeg rather than assuming they match the example.
  • Audio with a generated or filtered visual: build a video stream using an FFmpeg source or filter, then map that stream alongside the sound. This requires a video-producing input/filter; the basic command above does not create one.

A 2020 FFmpeg-user discussion describes one community member’s approach to a static-image stream, but it is dated advice rather than an official, universal YouTube rule about silent audio or acceptable stream shapes: the discussion.

Match YouTube’s current ingest guidance

YouTube’s encoder help page, accessed on 2026-10-03, lists the following guidance. Settings and recommendations can change, so compare these values with the current page and the supported settings shown in your Live Control Room before going live.

Setting YouTube guidance
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery into and through Google’s servers.
Video codecs H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps.
Keyframe interval Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio codecs AAC or MP3. 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC.
Bitrate mode CBR.
Audio sample rate 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1.
Stereo audio bitrate 128 Kbps.
Video bitrate Depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current table and test the available upload bandwidth rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

For example, the H.264 table currently lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p30 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guaranteed requirements for every source or setup. The page lists different values for AV1 and H.265. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the applicable codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Preflight and start the stream

  1. Check the output settings: confirm the selected codecs, frame rate, bitrate mode, audio layout, and keyframe interval are suitable for the YouTube stream.
  2. Check upload capacity: run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than choosing a video bitrate that consumes all available upstream bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing the connection.
  3. Test representative material: preview the stream with the actual kind of audio and video movement you plan to use. Confirm both are present and that the loop resumes as expected.
  4. Start FFmpeg and inspect its output: look for encoder or input errors and confirm that the process continues reading and sending media.
  5. Monitor YouTube stream health: use the Live Control Room’s diagnostics during the session and address warnings before relying on the stream for an extended run.

YouTube recommends a preflight with representative audio and video movement, an upload test, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance explains the recommended workflow.

Troubleshooting a looping stream

  • YouTube receives no video or audio: check the -map indexes and confirm the file actually contains the selected streams. If the source is audio-only, supply a compatible visual stream when the workflow requires one.
  • The stream runs too fast or ends quickly: confirm -re is placed before the file input it should pace. FFmpeg defines it as reading at the input’s native rate.
  • FFmpeg rejects the output or YouTube does not accept it: check codec/container compatibility and compare the output with the current YouTube ingest settings. Consider transcoding only if conversion is needed.
  • Stream health degrades or disconnects: check FFmpeg’s logs, YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics, upstream bandwidth, CPU headroom, timestamps, and whether the input loop returns cleanly. These are practical troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed diagnoses; a 2022 community post describes CPU pressure in one individual setup, not a universal failure pattern: the example.
  • Keyframes do not meet guidance: relate GOP length to the actual output frame rate. A GOP of 60 frames is two seconds at 30 fps but not at every frame rate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
