The right choice depends on the feel and tone you want, your bass’s scale and stringing method, the set’s gauge and tension, and whether its wound length fits your instrument. Use the models below as conditional starting points, not as a universal ranking.
What to compare when choosing flatwounds
Feel and tone
Flatwounds can vary in perceived smoothness, brightness, warmth, and stiffness. Descriptions such as “dark,” “mellow,” or “warm” are manufacturers’ characterizations of their own products, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Your preference matters more than a supposed winner: a player seeking a mellow sound and little finger noise may want a different balance from one looking for a brighter flat.
Gauge and tension
Gauge is one buying consideration, but it does not by itself tell you how a set will feel. Construction also differs, and equal gauges from different brands do not establish equal tension. D’Addario publishes tension figures for its ECB82 set, while Thomastik-Infeld lists gauge and tension by scale for its Jazz Flats. Check the maker’s specifications for the exact set rather than extrapolating between brands.
Fit and setup
Before ordering, confirm the bass’s scale, required wound length, string count, tuning, and bridge-routing requirements. A set’s wound portion must fit the instrument; scale length alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Flatwound sets to consider
These options have distinct specifications and manufacturer descriptions. The evidence available does not establish a controlled comparison or an overall ranking.
| Set | Construction and documented specifications | Manufacturer positioning or editorial description |
|---|---|---|
| Fender 9050 | Fender lists stainless-steel flatwounds in long-scale sets including .045–.100, .045–.105, .050–.100, and .055–.105. | Fender describes them as mellow, for players seeking warm tone with little finger noise. |
| D’Addario XL Chromes ECB82 | D’Addario describes a flattened, polished stainless-steel ribbon wrap over a Hex-Core. The ECB82 is listed as .050–.105 and the product page includes a tension table. | D’Addario characterizes the tone as dark yet warm. |
| Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats JF344 | The catalog describes a pliable steel core with silk inlay and a nickel-alloy ribbon flatwound. The long-scale JF344 gauges are .043, .056, .070, and .100; the catalog also lists short- and super-long-scale specifications. | Use its scale-specific catalog specifications to compare fit and tension; no cross-brand ranking is established. |
| Ernie Ball Group II | Ernie Ball describes a flat stainless-steel wrap around a hex-shaped tin-plated steel core. The listed gauges are .045, .065, .085, and .105. | Ernie Ball positions flatwounds as a darker, mellower option and notes that scale length and tuning affect available choices. |
| La Bella Deep Talkin’ Bass 760 series | Available variations include different gauges, scale lengths, and string counts. Check La Bella’s guide for wound length and through-body compatibility. | Guitar World describes the set as full and punchy with a taut feel, initially bright before settling toward a warmer, thumpier sound. These are editorial assessments, not controlled test results. |
Check wound length and bridge routing before buying
La Bella’s bass string guide recommends measuring from the ball end to just past the nut to determine the required wound length. It lists these lengths for its own sets:

| La Bella set scale category | Listed wound length |
|---|---|
| Short scale | 32 1/4 inches |
| Medium scale | 34 1/4 inches |
| Standard/long scale | 36 3/4 inches |
| Extra-long scale | 38 inches |
These are La Bella-specific dimensions, not universal scale-length equivalents. The guide also says the wound section should clear the nut and should not wrap around the tuner post. If your bass requires strings to pass through the body, La Bella warns against using its standard flatwound sets and directs buyers to its “-TB” variants. Check the chosen manufacturer’s specifications against your particular bass.
