Best FFmpeg Command for Looping a Recorded Lecture to YouTube Live

A practical FFmpeg template for looping a recorded lecture to YouTube Live, with the YouTube ingest settings and checks that matter.

To loop a recorded lecture indefinitely as a YouTube Live stream, use FFmpeg’s input-side -stream_loop -1 and pace the file in real time with -re. For a 1080p/30 fps lecture with audio, this command is a practical starting point:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "lecture.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

Replace lecture.mp4 with your recording and replace the destination with the stream URL and key shown for the actual event in YouTube Live Control Room. The endpoint shown here is a template, not a substitute for checking the event’s URL. A stream key is password-like: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or article.

This is a template, not a tested or guaranteed result. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required encoders and protocol, then test the actual source in YouTube Live Control Room. The command targets H.264 1080p/30 video and AAC stereo audio; the 5 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube’s listed minimum for that H.264 format, not a universal ideal.

What the important FFmpeg options do

  • -re reads the file at its native rate, pacing file input for live output instead of sending the recording as fast as the computer can process it. FFmpeg’s official protocol documentation shows the same real-time pattern for RTMP output.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so keep it before -i. The FFmpeg project’s 2015 documentation change records the option name.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; the question mark makes that mapping optional.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264. -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding work than slower presets; whether it can keep up depends on your machine and source.
  • -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M sets the example video rate and rate-control buffer. Change these to suit YouTube’s guidance for your output format and your connection’s sustained upload capacity.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p sets a widely supported pixel format. -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 sets a 60-frame GOP and disables scene-cut keyframe changes. At 30 fps, 60 frames is a two-second interval.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed stereo recommendations.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP-family ingest workflow.

Match the output to YouTube’s live ingest guidance

YouTube’s current live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommend RTMPS. They list H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video options; the command above uses H.264. YouTube’s guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For frame rates other than 30 fps, choose a GOP around two seconds by multiplying the output frame rate by two.

H.264 output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance accessed in 2026; the retrieved page does not state a publication year. The 1080p/30 command uses the listed minimum. Choose the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, allow upload headroom, and check stream health rather than assuming a connection’s advertised maximum is sustainable.

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and CBR bitrate encoding; for stereo audio it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The command follows those audio values. RTMPS encrypts the transmission: FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.

Start the stream and verify the loop

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and open Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance to obtain that event’s stream URL and key. Treat the key as a credential.
  2. Run the command with the correct file path and event destination. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement and monitoring stream health during the event.
  3. Set the event’s visibility and schedule in YouTube Studio, then verify that it is accessible as intended. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving or presenting a healthy stream.
  4. Let the source reach its end and confirm that playback starts again as expected. The loop option is documented, but the behavior of your particular file and setup still needs verification.

Adjustments for other files and machines

Different resolution or frame rate

Use YouTube’s bitrate row for the output resolution and frame rate. Set the GOP to approximately two seconds—for example, frame rate multiplied by two—rather than copying -g 60 unchanged to every frame rate. The sample command is specifically configured for 30 fps.

Encoding cannot keep up

Software H.264 encoding uses local CPU. If the encoder cannot process the video in real time, try a faster x264 preset or a hardware encoder supported by your FFmpeg build, while retaining ingest-compatible output settings. Test on the actual machine; no particular preset or encoder is guaranteed to meet real-time speed.

Copying the source instead of transcoding

-c:v copy -c:a copy can reduce CPU use when the recording already has suitable codecs and parameters. It does not make an incompatible source suitable: verify codec, bitrate, keyframe cadence, frame rate, and audio against the selected YouTube ingest settings. If you cannot confirm the source meets them, transcode and inspect the ingest.

No audio in the recording

The optional audio map prevents FFmpeg from failing solely because no audio stream is present. Check the YouTube preview and confirm that a video without audio is the presentation you intend; do not assume the optional map guarantees the desired viewer experience.

RTMPS endpoint or protocol trouble

Use the URL shown for the event rather than relying on the example endpoint. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and FFmpeg documents the protocol as RTMP over secure SSL.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the event’s stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the key was not mistyped or revoked, and verify protocol support in the FFmpeg build.
  • The stream is unstable or reports poor health: compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the chosen output, check sustained upload capacity and leave headroom. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during a representative test.
  • Video is choppy or FFmpeg falls behind: check whether local encoding can keep pace; try a faster preset or supported hardware encoding. Also confirm the upload connection can sustain the configured output.
  • Audio is missing or not as intended: inspect the source’s audio streams and the Live Control Room preview. The optional mapping allows absent audio; it does not create an audio track.
  • The repeat does not behave as expected: ensure -stream_loop -1 is before -i, and test through the file’s end. A process still running is not proof that viewers are receiving a continuous, healthy presentation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than running FFmpeg on your own machine, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
