AWS Elemental MediaLive

Best Cloud Service for an Always-On YouTube Live Product Demo Channel

The best fit depends on whether your YouTube demo is a prerecorded loop or a live feed. Compare cloud continuity, delivery and costs before committing.

For a prerecorded product-demo loop, StreamNeo is the simplest first option to try: it keeps uploaded videos running on YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. For a live camera or screen feed that needs managed cloud encoding, Google Cloud Live Stream API and AWS Elemental MediaLive are the relevant options in this comparison. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the feed, cloud environment, monitoring capability and full delivery cost.

Choose by the kind of demo you need to keep live

A prerecorded loop and an actively operated product demonstration are different streaming jobs. A loop plays uploaded footage repeatedly; a live demo sends a current camera, screen or other live feed through an encoder. Decide which one you need before comparing services, because purpose-built looping tools and managed cloud encoders are not interchangeable.

  • Prerecorded loop: use a service designed to play uploaded videos continuously. YouTube’s encoder help page identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing alone does not establish its suitability for camera-based or actively operated demonstrations.
  • Live camera or screen feed: use a managed encoder that can send output to YouTube and plan for monitoring, reconnects and service costs. Google Cloud Live Stream API and AWS Elemental MediaLive fit this category.
  • Mixed workflow: determine whether the service supports the transitions and operating controls your demo requires. The cited documentation does not establish that any one option handles every mixed setup.

Options for an always-on YouTube channel

Option Best fit Continuity and output Cost considerations
StreamNeo Looping uploaded videos on YouTube without keeping a computer on. Runs the loop from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live encoder. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots. First day is free with no card.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Teams needing managed cloud encoding and remote RTMP or SRT distribution, particularly where Google Cloud fits their workflow. Can distribute to a remote endpoint. A channel session lasts 24 hours before it may be restarted, so continuous operation needs monitoring and restart handling; seamless restart is not guaranteed by the cited documentation. Charges depend on active channel time and resolution; distribution outputs add output charges and an endpoint fee. An active channel can be billed even without an input.
AWS Elemental MediaLive Teams already operating an AWS-based managed video workflow. YouTube lists MediaLive as a verified encoder. AWS documents H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP or RTMPS output. Idle push inputs and channels may incur charges. Delivery outside AWS can add transfer fees; separate encoding costs from any packaging or CDN delivery costs.
Gyre A possible fit for a prerecorded-video loop. YouTube’s encoder help page identifies it as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-streaming tool. That listing does not establish suitability for interactive, camera-based or actively operated demonstrations. Pricing and detailed capabilities are not established by the cited YouTube listing.

For a managed encoder, Google Cloud is a plausible starting point when you can automate recovery and accept the documented session boundary. MediaLive is credible when your workflow is AWS-centered. The available evidence does not support a universal winner or a tailored monthly bill for an unspecified setup.

How to connect a cloud encoder to YouTube

  1. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube Help’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guidance. Set up the stream and obtain its stream URL and key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Configure the encoder’s output. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s destination settings. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP. Google Cloud’s remote-distribution workflow sends output to a remote endpoint, while MediaLive supports RTMP or RTMPS output.
  3. Match video settings to the feed and network. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance. Do not choose a higher bitrate than the source or connection can sustain; leave adequate upload headroom for a stable feed.
  4. Start the feed and check YouTube’s preview. Start sending from the encoder, then verify that YouTube receives the signal and that picture and sound are correct before treating the channel as live. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the setup and start sequence.
  5. Keep the stream supervised by software or people. Monitor encoder state and YouTube ingest, alert on a lost feed, and test a restart or reconnect procedure. For Google Cloud, account specifically for the possible restart after a 24-hour session. Do not assume a cloud encoder will make an uninterrupted archive of any duration: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

What the Google Cloud and AWS limits mean in practice

Google Cloud: plan around the session boundary

Google Cloud documents that live stream sessions last 24 hours after a channel starts; after 24 hours in a state other than stopped or stopping, the channel may be restarted. That makes a monitored restart path a production requirement for an always-on channel. Build alerting and recovery into the operation, and validate what viewers see during a restart rather than assuming it will be seamless. Google Cloud also says an active channel can be billed without an input stream, so stop resources when they are not needed.

Its remote distribution guide describes RTMP and SRT push delivery and demonstrates an FFmpeg feed sent into the service before distribution to a remote endpoint. The Live Stream API overview provides the service context; implementation should follow the current service documentation for your chosen topology.

AWS MediaLive: count idle resources and downstream delivery

AWS lists H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP or RTMPS output, and YouTube lists MediaLive among verified encoders. Check the MediaLive supported codecs by output type and current MediaLive pricing. AWS notes that push inputs and channels may be charged while idle, and delivery outside AWS may incur transfer fees.

The AWS deployment-planning page gives a $1.99-per-hour example for the input and outputs in its specific sample channel configuration. It is not a quote for a single YouTube output. Its separate $69.74-per-hour example describes a specified one-hour event with 1,000 viewers and includes encoding, packaging and CloudFront distribution. Neither scenario is a current price estimate for this channel; the topology and assumptions differ.

Estimate the real cost before committing

A 24/7 bill depends on more than the encoder’s hourly rate. Define the source format, resolution, region, number of outputs, expected operating hours, audience and whether packaging or CDN delivery is part of the workflow. Then account for:

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded demo loop, StreamNeo uses a shorter setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS or home internet connection has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream a live camera feed.

Copyright, archives and channel policy

Use footage, music, product captures and other material that you own or are licensed to stream. A continuous loop does not itself establish permission to use third-party content, and the cited encoder documentation does not guarantee that a stream complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies. Review YouTube’s requirements for the channel and content before scheduling a long-running broadcast. Also distinguish live continuity from archiving: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, not that every longer stream will be archived in full.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the feed. Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not sending, or output protocol mismatch. Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder destination; confirm the encoder is started and configured for RTMP or RTMPS as required.
The feed repeatedly drops or becomes unstable. Network capacity, encoder interruptions or inadequate monitoring and recovery. Check sustained upload capacity and the selected bitrate; monitor both encoder state and YouTube ingest, then test the reconnect procedure.
A Google Cloud channel stops or restarts around a day later. The documented 24-hour session boundary. Implement alerting and a monitored restart path; do not rely on an undocumented seamless transition.
Cloud costs continue when no video is being sent. Some active or idle resources remain billable. Review channel and input state, output charges, endpoint fees and transfer costs; stop resources not required for the always-on schedule.
A long stream is missing or incomplete in the archive. YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not treat a stream longer than that as guaranteed to produce a complete automatic archive; make separate recording and retention plans if an archive is essential.
