For most streamers, OBS Studio is the best place to start: it is free, open source, and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose vMix if you want a Windows-based live-production suite with documented green- and blue-screen keying controls. Choose NVIDIA Broadcast if you want AI background removal without a physical screen and have supported RTX hardware. These tools solve related but different problems, and no controlled comparison establishes one as the visual or performance winner.
Chroma key or AI background removal: which do you need?
Conventional chroma key removes a selected color—usually green or blue—from a camera image, revealing another image or scene behind the subject. It requires a physical, consistently colored background. NVIDIA Broadcast takes a different approach: AI removes the webcam background and can replace it with an image or video, or blur it. It does not require a green screen, but it does require supported NVIDIA hardware. vMix’s guide to chroma key and NVIDIA’s Broadcast effects information describe these respective workflows.
If you already own a screen, compare conventional keying tools. If you do not, and your computer meets NVIDIA’s requirements, AI removal may be the simpler setup. For an interview, documentary commentary, or multi-camera program, also consider whether you need a broader production environment for switching sources, recording, and streaming—not just background removal.

Which one should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio for a low-cost, flexible start
OBS is the practical first choice if you want a free, cross-platform production setup and are willing to configure your scenes and sources. It can combine a webcam, capture card, images, and windows in scenes. The OBS Project cautions that meeting the basic system requirements does not ensure a computer can stream or record successfully; output depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Start with its Auto Configuration Wizard rather than assuming your machine can handle a particular workload. See OBS system requirements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose vMix for a Windows production suite with documented keying controls
vMix is worth evaluating when chroma key is one part of a larger live production. Its guide documents green/blue keying, tolerance adjustment, virtual sets, and a filter intended to address green or blue halos. Inspect the result using your actual camera feed and adjust controls until the subject’s edges and any color spill look acceptable; a preset cannot guarantee a clean result in every room or with every camera. Review the keying guide and hardware guidance before choosing it.
Choose NVIDIA Broadcast if you have supported RTX hardware and no physical screen
NVIDIA lists RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, or TITAN RTX and above, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit, and driver 570.xx or higher in its reviewed FAQ. Requirements can change, so check NVIDIA’s current FAQ. Broadcast’s virtual camera can then be selected as a camera source in a supported streaming app, including OBS. NVIDIA notes that effects use system resources and that the impact varies with GPU, game, camera resolution and frame rate, and enabled effects.

Set up a green-screen stream
1. Prepare the physical screen and camera image
Use a clean, evenly colored green or blue background and avoid letting its color spill onto the subject. Light and frame the subject and background so the keyer can distinguish them; check the image through the camera you will actually stream with. Results depend on the camera, movement, room conditions, and configuration, so inspect the edges rather than relying on a universal lighting ratio or setting.
2. Build the scene in your chosen software
Add the camera and the background image, video, or scene element you want viewers to see behind you. In OBS, configure the scene and sources, then consult the current OBS documentation for the chroma-key filter controls; exact OBS filter steps are not established by the cited official pages here. In vMix, use the documented green/blue chroma-key controls and adjust tolerance and halo filtering against the live camera image.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Check the finished composite and system load
Watch the subject’s outline while moving, turning, or gesturing, and look for leftover background, missing detail, or green/blue halos. Test the complete scene with the intended output resolution and frame rate. For OBS, use the Auto Configuration Wizard and assess performance with your full set of scenes and sources; a compatible system alone is not a streaming-performance guarantee. For NVIDIA Broadcast, check that the virtual camera appears in the streaming app and test the effects you plan to use with the rest of your workload running.
4. Run a private or unlisted test before going live
Confirm that camera framing, background edges, audio, scene switching, and stream output work together. A key that looks clean in a still frame may show artifacts during movement. Do not commit to a production based solely on a software’s minimum requirements or a single preview.

What to know about cost, compatibility, and image quality
- Cost: OBS is free and open source. vMix offers lifetime licensing, subscriptions, and a 60-day full-featured trial according to its product page; check the current terms and prices. NVIDIA Broadcast’s key limitation in this comparison is compatible hardware, not a physical-screen purchase.
- Hardware: Verify the operating system and GPU before installing. vMix is Windows-based; NVIDIA Broadcast’s listed requirements rule out non-RTX systems in the reviewed FAQ. OBS runs on three major desktop platforms, but actual performance varies.
- Image quality: No independent, reproducible head-to-head test establishes which option gives the cleanest edges, handles motion best, or uses the least CPU/GPU. Camera quality, lighting, subject movement, scene complexity, and machine load all affect the result.
- Physical screen: A green or blue backdrop is relevant only for conventional chroma key. It is not a requirement for NVIDIA Broadcast’s AI background effect.
Troubleshooting common problems
The subject has a green or blue fringe
Check for color spill and uneven background appearance. In vMix, adjust tolerance and test the green/blue halo filter against the camera feed. Avoid changing settings based on a static frame alone; inspect movement and fine edges too.
Parts of the subject disappear or the background remains
Review the camera framing and the consistency of the screen color, then adjust the key against the real camera image. A screen that appears uniform to the eye may still be uneven in the camera feed. There is no single verified numeric setting that works across cameras and rooms.

NVIDIA Broadcast is unavailable or its virtual camera is missing
Recheck the current operating-system, GPU, RAM, and driver requirements in NVIDIA’s FAQ. Confirm that Broadcast is installed and that the streaming app is set to use its virtual camera rather than the physical webcam.
The stream stutters or the computer struggles
Reduce workload or simplify the scene, then test again at the intended resolution and frame rate. OBS performance depends on encoder, output settings, and scene complexity; NVIDIA Broadcast’s effects also consume system resources. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not as a guarantee for every production.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded program live on YouTube around the clock, that is a separate workflow from chroma-keying a live camera. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
