For a single 1080p30 H.264 YouTube live stream, set the video bitrate to 14 Mbps, YouTube’s current recommendation. YouTube also recommends 20% upload headroom, so aim for about 17.5 Mbps of stable measured upload capacity available to the encoder. For 1080p60 H.264, the recommended bitrate is 17 Mbps; with the same margin, plan on about 21.25 Mbps of measured upload. These upload targets are calculations from YouTube’s headroom guidance, not guarantees from Airtel.
An Airtel Xstream Fiber plan’s advertised speed does not establish that your connection can sustain a stream around the clock. Test upload at the encoder’s location under typical household use, then run a private or unlisted rehearsal and watch YouTube’s stream health. If capacity varies, lower the resolution or bitrate until it remains stable.
Choose bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations depend on the ingestion codec as well as resolution and frame rate. The following H.264 values are YouTube’s published recommendations; they are encoder settings, not a promise that a particular internet connection will support them.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are for H.264. YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265, so check the matching codec guidance rather than reusing an H.264 number. YouTube also automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

Set the encoder for YouTube ingestion
For the bitrate recommendations above, configure the encoder and YouTube connection using the relevant ingestion settings:
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS ingestion is supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Stream key: use the key associated with the YouTube live stream you intend to broadcast, and keep it private. Do not publish it in a screenshot, recording or public message.
For current codec-specific rates and ingestion guidance, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Check actual upload capacity, not the plan name
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That margin allows room for fluctuations and other network activity; it is not extra stream bitrate. For a single stream, the approximate capacity targets below follow from dividing the recommended bitrate by 0.8:
| H.264 stream | Recommended stream bitrate | Approximate measured upload target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
The calculated targets are for one stream and do not include additional primary or backup streams. Account for those streams and any audio or other encoder/network load when assessing total bandwidth. A speed test is only a snapshot: test outbound upload at the location and on the connection the encoder will use, while household activity is representative. Download speed alone does not establish upload capacity, and other people sharing the network can reduce what is available to the encoder. YouTube recommends using a reliable connection and monitoring stream health during a rehearsal. Its guidance is at Streaming tips.

What Airtel Xstream Fiber speeds and FUP mean for a continuous stream
Airtel India’s public broadband page lists advertised tiers of up to 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1024 Mbps, with availability varying by location. Those are plan descriptions, not guarantees of stable upload throughput at an individual home. Check the upload performance of your own line rather than inferring it from a tier’s advertised speed. See Airtel’s broadband plans.
Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms state a Fair Usage Policy threshold of 3333 GB in a billing cycle, after which speed is reduced to 1 Mbps; the terms also say Airtel may amend the FUP. Check the terms attached to your current plan, since public plan wording and terms can change. The plan page’s “unlimited” wording should not be read as unlimited full-speed data in light of those terms. See Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms.

At a constant 14 Mbps, one stream transfers about 151.2 GB per day, or about 4.54 TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and other usage. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not an Airtel allowance figure. It exceeds the 3333 GB FUP threshold stated in Airtel’s terms if that threshold applies to your account and the stream stays at that bitrate throughout the billing cycle.
Rehearse and adjust before leaving it live
- Pick the target format. Choose resolution, frame rate and ingestion codec first; use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation rather than starting with the plan’s advertised speed.
- Measure available outbound bandwidth. Test from the encoder’s actual location and connection during representative household usage. Confirm there is enough stable upload for the stream plus YouTube’s recommended headroom and any backup stream load.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Watch YouTube’s stream health while the encoder runs. A short speed test cannot show whether the connection will remain steady over a full day.
- Reduce the load if needed. If upload varies or stream health deteriorates, lower resolution or bitrate and repeat the rehearsal. Do not use a bitrate that consumes nearly all measured upload capacity.
- Review monthly data implications. Compare the stream’s estimated transfer with the FUP terms currently attached to your Airtel account, including other household usage.
Common bitrate and connection problems
- Stream drops or YouTube reports poor connection: available upload may be fluctuating or shared. Re-test outbound capacity under normal network load, reduce bitrate or resolution, and rehearse again while watching stream health.
- Advertised plan speed looks sufficient, but the stream is unstable: the plan figure is not an individual sustained-upload guarantee. Measure the encoder’s actual outbound connection; do not substitute a download test or plan label.
- Another stream or household activity competes for bandwidth: include primary and backup stream bitrates and allow for other users when calculating capacity. YouTube’s 20% margin applies to total stream load.
- Stream health is poor despite apparently adequate upload: confirm that the encoder uses the correct codec-specific bitrate, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS where available; then repeat a rehearsal.
- Speed falls after heavy monthly use: check the current account-specific Airtel FUP terms. The published terms cited above state a threshold and speed reduction, but Airtel says the FUP may be amended.
