For sustained low-register riffs, a baritone electric guitar is a practical choice: its longer scale and heavier strings help keep string tension at lower pitches. The right model depends on the tuning you play, the feel and reach you prefer, and whether the guitar’s factory setup matches your needs. Official specifications offer useful comparisons, but they do not establish which instrument performs best in a hands-on test.
Is a baritone guitar right for your tuning?
A baritone is worth considering if you regularly play below standard guitar tunings and want strings that feel more controlled at lower pitches. Scale length and string gauge work together: Taylor explains that its baritone uses a 27-inch scale rather than 25.5 inches, plus heavier-gauge strings, to maintain normal tension at a lower pitch. That is manufacturer guidance for Taylor’s baritone, not a universal formula for every instrument or tuning. Taylor’s tuning guidance
You do not need a baritone simply because you play one low-tuned song. Compare the guitar’s intended or factory tuning with the tuning you actually use, and consider how often you will play there. A guitar optimized for one setup may need different strings and an adjustment if you retune it substantially.
What scale length is best for drop tuning?
There is no single best scale length for every player. The listed models below span 27.7 to 28.03 inches, while Taylor’s guidance describes a 27-inch baritone. Longer scale is one way to support lower pitches with useful string tension, but the figures alone do not tell you how comfortable a neck will feel or how a guitar will suit your parts.
#1 Best Overall
- all guitars are made punctually by CNC machine with computer programming
- Perfect neck with almost no defectiveness
- All guitars with good specification
- Hammer the buzzing fret down a bit to fix the buzzing sound. You can widen the pot a bit to make it fit to the knob
Try the neck and strings if possible. A longer scale changes the reach between frets and can affect playing feel; whether that suits your hands, bends, chords, or riffing is personal. The product specifications establish scale length, not individual comfort.

| Model | Published scale | Factory tuning or strings listed | Manufacturer positioning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gibson Victory Baritone | 28.0 in / 711.2 mm | B to B; .013–.062 strings | Gibson describes it as suited to heavy music and modern stylings. Gibson product page |
| PRS SE 277 (2022 listing) | 27.7 in | String gauge not stated in the retrieved PRS listing | PRS positions it for heavier, aggressive playing and drop-tuned riffs. PRS product listing |
| Cort KX500 Baritone | 28.03 in / 712 mm | D’Addario EXL157; .014–.068 strings | Cort says the scale supports drop tunings. Cort product announcement |
Gibson’s page lists a B-to-B setup, while the PRS and Cort descriptions emphasize heavier or drop-tuned playing without establishing the same factory tuning. Match the listed setup to your intended tuning rather than treating “baritone” as one standardized configuration.

There is no responsible one-gauge recommendation without knowing the guitar’s scale length and the tuning you want. The cited examples themselves differ: Gibson lists .013–.062 strings on a 28-inch guitar, while Cort lists .014–.068 on a 28.03-inch model. These are manufacturer specifications for those instruments, not prescriptions for every player.

Choose strings and setup together. If you change tuning, a suitable gauge and instrument adjustment can matter for tension and intonation; do not assume a guitar will intonate optimally after a substantial retune without setup work. For a specific tuning, consult a qualified technician or the guitar manufacturer’s setup guidance.

How to choose between these models
- Start with your tuning. The Gibson’s listed B-to-B tuning is the clearest factory-tuning reference among these examples. Verify that any other model’s setup suits the pitch you plan to use.
- Compare the scale and string feel. The listed scales run from 27.7 inches on the PRS to 28.03 inches on the Cort. Those measurements are useful reference points, not a comfort ranking.
- Try the neck if you can. Check whether the reach and heavier strings feel workable for your chords, bends, and riff patterns.
- Budget for setup if needed. A different tuning or string set may call for adjustment. Current prices, stock, weight, neck profile, pickup preference, and comparative performance are not established by the cited product information.
