Choose by the audio sources you need to connect and route—microphones, instruments, computer or game sound, guests, and audio sent back to a call or stream. The Yamaha AG06MK2 is a compact, streaming-oriented option with loopback; Yamaha’s MG-XU mixers offer a more traditional analog layout whose connections vary by model; and the RØDECaster Pro II is an integrated creator console with assignable channels, dual USB, processing, and recording. These are differences in documented features, not results of a side-by-side test.
What does an audio mixer do for a livestream?
A mixer brings sound sources together and gives you a way to control or route them. Depending on your setup, those sources might include a microphone, game or desktop audio, music, a guest on a call, or notifications. The right mixer is the one that supports the sources and destinations you actually use—not necessarily the one with the most faders.
Before choosing, map both sides of the setup: what needs to enter the mixer, and what audio needs to leave it for your streaming software, headphones, a call, or a recording. Loopback is one specific way of routing computer audio back into a stream; it is not a general synonym for every kind of multi-channel routing.
Which audio mixer should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | Documented strengths | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha AG06MK2 | A creator who wants a compact mixer designed with streaming workflows in mind. | Six-channel USB mixer; loopback; two simultaneous condenser microphone inputs; mute button; onboard processing. | Confirm its inputs and routing match every source in your setup, especially if you need more than two microphone inputs. |
| Yamaha MG-XU family, including MG10XU | Someone who prefers a conventional analog mixer layout and wants to choose a model with the needed connections. | Model-dependent mic/line, stereo line, monitor, headphone, auxiliary, and group configurations. Yamaha lists USB Audio Class 2.0 and up to 192 kHz/24-bit digital I/O for specified XU models, including MG10XU. | Check the exact model’s USB and routing specifications. Do not assume a feature listed for another MG-XU model is included on MG10XU. |
| RØDECaster Pro II | A creator who wants assignable controls, integrated processing, multiple USB connections, or recording options in one console. | Four combo inputs; nine assignable channels (six physical and three virtual faders); dual USB-C; SMART pads; onboard processing; recording to microSD, USB storage, or computer. | Check the intended computer, operating system, browser, and streaming app against the routing you plan to use. RØDE warns that a browser-based streaming platform may not accept the Main Multitrack source on Windows. |

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AG Controller provides software control, and Yamaha lists USB-C support for Windows and Mac, plus connection routes for iOS and Android. Yamaha also identifies the mixer as OBS certified; that is not a guarantee for every computer configuration or streaming application. Its recording and playback specification is two-track, 24-bit/192-kHz. Consider it when loopback and a streaming-oriented workflow matter more than having a larger bank of traditional mixer connections.
Yamaha MG-XU: choose by exact model
The MG-XU line uses a conventional analog mixer layout, but it is a family, not one fixed specification. Yamaha’s MG analog mixing console specifications distinguish models by mic/line and stereo-line inputs, outputs, monitor and headphone connections, auxiliaries, groups, and digital I/O. For specified XU models, including MG10XU, Yamaha lists USB Audio Class 2.0 with digital I/O up to 192 kHz/24-bit.

Compare the table for the precise model you are considering with a written list of your sources and destinations. The family name alone does not establish that a particular model has the inputs, USB connection, or routing you need.
RØDECaster Pro II: assignable channels and recording options
The RØDECaster Pro II combines four Neutrik combo inputs with nine individually assignable channels: six physical faders and three virtual faders. It also includes dual USB-C, Bluetooth, programmable SMART pads, APHEX processing, and four headphone outputs. RØDE lists multitrack or stereo recording to microSD, USB storage, or a computer. Its product page describes it as suitable for uses ranging from a single-microphone livestream to multitracked music recording; that is the manufacturer’s description, not a comparative test.

Compatibility depends on the route you intend to use, not just on the connector fitting. RØDE’s USB connection guide cautions that a browser-based streaming platform may not accept the Main Multitrack source on Windows. Check the guide against your operating system and streaming app before relying on that source.
Do I need an audio mixer to stream?
Not necessarily. A mixer is useful when you need to manage several sources, adjust them independently, monitor them, or route different feeds. If your setup is a single microphone and a simple computer input, first determine whether your existing audio interface or software already handles the job. If you need separate control of a mic, game audio, a call, or music, a mixer may make the routing easier—but the product must support the specific inputs and outputs involved.

What to check before you buy
- Count sources and connectors: List microphones, instruments, computer audio, guests, and other feeds, then match each to the mixer’s actual input type. A combo connector, Hi-Z input, and TRRS connection serve different connection needs.
- Map destinations: Identify what should reach the streaming app, headphones, a call, and any local recording. Do not treat a loopback label as proof that every desired mix can be routed independently.
- Decide how you want to control the mix: Compare direct physical controls with assignable or software-configured controls. The AG06MK2 offers a mute button and AG Controller; the Pro II offers physical and virtual assignable faders; MG-XU layouts vary by model.
- Check computer and app compatibility: Verify the exact operating system and streaming software, particularly if you intend to use multitrack USB audio or a browser-based platform.
- Separate hardware from audio quality: A mixer alone does not guarantee a better-sounding stream. Gain, routing, monitoring, microphone choice, room acoustics, and platform configuration also affect the result.
Or let it run in the cloud
An audio mixer manages sound; it does not keep a prerecorded YouTube video streaming 24/7. If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
