TechRadar’s May 2025 guide recommends 32 anime series across action, fantasy, comedy, science fiction and older classics, with streaming services listed for each pick. It is a curated set of suggestions, not a definitive ranking. Its platform notes reflect an editorial update dated May 20, 2025—not a verified catalog for today—so check your country’s service listings for the exact series, season and language track before starting.
How to choose an anime from the list
Start with the kind of story and viewing commitment you want, rather than treating the guide’s order as a universal ranking. TechRadar’s selection ranges from newer-at-the-time releases and recent fantasy or comedy to long-running adventures and older classics. The titles below are examples named in the guide, not a reconstruction of all 32 entries or their complete rationales.
- For recent fantasy and comedy: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Delicious in Dungeon are among the guide’s newer recommendations.
- For action and long-running adventures: consider Bleach, One Piece, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan or Hunter x Hunter.
- For science fiction and psychological stories: the list includes Steins;Gate, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Paranoia Agent.
- For comedy, sport or a different visual style: examples include Mob Psycho 100, Haikyu!!, Ping Pong the Animation and FLCL.
- For well-known older favorites: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood appear in the selection.
Before committing, check whether the story is complete or continuing and how many seasons you want to watch. Episode counts in the May 2025 guide are dated editorial figures; counts can change for ongoing series and may not represent every season.
Where to watch the recommended anime
The May 20, 2025 guide lists services including Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Peacock, Pluto TV and Hoopla, with the combination varying by title. Its examples include Dan Da Dan on Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix; Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End on Hulu, Netflix and Crunchyroll; and Bleach on Hulu and Disney+. These are historical listings from that guide, not confirmation of present-day access.

Availability depends on country, service, season and language version. VIZ Media’s streaming-partners page names platforms that carry VIZ anime and cautions: “Series availability varies by platform, country and version (dubbed or subtitled). All series’ availability are subject to change.” Check the service’s local catalog for the specific title and season, then confirm the audio and subtitle options.

- Netflix’s anime catalog is a live listing; it does not establish that a title is available in every country or that it appeared in the May 2025 guide’s catalog.
Subtitles, dubbing and choosing a language
Anime is often available with Japanese audio and English subtitles, an English dub, or both, but the options vary by title and service. Hulu’s guide, revised April 10, 2025, describes both subtitle and dubbing choices and said its Anime Hub then offered “300+ titles.” That is Hulu’s own dated catalog claim, not a current count or proof that a particular show is available now.
Check the title’s playback or episode page for language options before settling in. A listing for a show does not necessarily mean every season has the same dub or subtitles.
Buying a series to watch offline or keep
If you prefer ownership, look for a title-specific anime Blu-ray or DVD and verify the exact season and edition. Crunchyroll’s April 29, 2025 Ani-May announcement named a Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Season 1 Part 2 Limited Edition Blu-ray and described anime home-video promotions at Barnes & Noble. That confirms physical releases are part of the market; it does not establish current stock or a disc edition for every series in the guide.
Rank #3
Before buying, confirm region compatibility and the included subtitle and dub options. A series may have multiple releases, and a product listing should match the season you want.

The underlying TechRadar guide is titled “The best anime shows: 32 fantastic series and where to watch them” and states that it was last updated May 20, 2025. Its selections, episode counts, selected Rotten Tomatoes scores and watch locations are editorial information tied to that edition.
