Ash Ketchum ranks first because the original Pokémon anime is built around his journey as a trainer. The rest of this list weighs each character’s story contribution, recurrence, development, distinctive dramatic or comic role, and how much the series would change without them. It covers the original Ash-led television era through the Orange Islands and into Johto; Tracey is included because he is a central companion during the Orange Islands arc. This is an editorial ranking, not an official poll.

How this ranking works

The scope is recurring human characters who meaningfully shape the early Ash-led anime: its protagonist, traveling companions, rival, recurring antagonists, and essential mentor. One-off trainers and guests are excluded. The Orange Islands are included, so Tracey belongs on the list; the boundary is not a claim that every later Johto character is covered.

Placements favor overall story function and distinctiveness over likability or raw screen time. A companion can matter through the daily life of the journey, while a rival or mentor can rank highly despite appearing less often. The official character profiles establish relationships and roles, not a canonical order. Pokémon’s series page describes Ash as “A boy who aims to be a Pokémon Master,” and identifies Misty and Brock among his companions (official Pokémon series character page).

The ranking

1. Ash Ketchum

Ash is the series’ structural center: the trainer journey begins with him, and his first partner, Pikachu, comes from Professor Oak. Every companion, rival, and challenge is framed in relation to that continuing quest. His centrality—not a claim that he is always the most nuanced character in a given episode—makes him the clear first choice. The official profiles also place his origin with Oak and describe his connection to the people around him (TV Tokyo character profiles).

#1 Best Overall

2. Misty

Misty is more than Ash’s first travel companion. Her identity as a Cerulean Gym Leader and her own ambition give her a stake in the world beyond supporting his goal. She brings sharp opinions and leadership to the group, and the friction and affection in her relationship with Ash help define the original travel-party dynamic. Pokémon’s official page says she lent Ash her bicycle before they went on a journey together (official Pokémon series character page).

3. Brock

Brock gives the traveling group practical steadiness and a distinct long-term aspiration: he wants to become a Pokémon Breeder. His knowledge and caretaking role make him a reliable counterpart to Ash’s impulsiveness, while his recurring romantic comedy supplies a separate comic function. His importance comes from both what he contributes to the group and the fact that he has a goal of his own. The official profile describes him as Pewter Gym Leader and a traveling companion, and states that he dreams of becoming a Pokémon Breeder (official Pokémon series character page).

4. Gary Oak

Gary is the most important early rival because his relationship to Ash reaches back to childhood and gives Ash’s ambition a personal point of comparison. He is not present as constantly as the traveling companions, but the rivalry adds stakes and direction to the trainer story. TV Tokyo’s profile identifies him as Ash’s childhood friend and lifelong rival, as well as Professor Oak’s grandson (TV Tokyo character profiles).

5. Jessie

Jessie earns a place among the major humans because she is one half of the anime’s recurring Team Rocket comic-antagonist partnership. Her forceful personality gives the trio a memorable human face and makes their repeated interference feel like a character-driven routine rather than anonymous opposition. She ranks below the core companions and Gary because her role chiefly serves the episode’s comic conflict. A character index records her early recurring presence, but that fact supports inclusion, not an objective rank (Bulbapedia character index).

6. James

James works best understood alongside Jessie: the contrast between their personalities is central to Team Rocket’s comic rhythm. His recurring presence makes him a recognizable antagonist, while the partnership gives the series a reliable source of reversals and comic failure. He sits just below Jessie here as an editorial judgment about the pair’s individual distinction, not a claim that one has a formally measured larger role. The character index lists him among early recurring anime characters (Bulbapedia character index).

7. Professor Oak

Professor Oak is a foundational mentor rather than a constant travel-party presence. By giving Ash Pikachu and setting the journey in motion, he is essential to the premise; his continuing researcher-and-mentor role also connects Ash’s adventures to the wider Pokémon world. He ranks below the more continuously active characters because his influence is greater at the story’s starting point than in its everyday group dynamic. The official profiles identify his relationship to Ash and Gary and his part in Ash’s beginning (TV Tokyo character profiles).

8. Tracey Sketchit

Tracey belongs because this ranking includes the Orange Islands, where he joins Ash and Misty as a traveling companion. His presence makes the list fit the stated era rather than stopping at the first travel-party lineup. He ranks lower because his inclusion is tied to that particular arc, not the series-wide structural role held by Ash, Misty, or Brock. A licensed Scholastic excerpt places Tracey alongside Misty and references Professor Oak, but it is not a complete anime chronology (Scholastic excerpt).

Why other plausible names are not ranked here

The title asks for major humans, not every recurring person. Delia Ketchum and Giovanni are reasonable candidates under a broader definition of recurring adults, but the evidence available for this specific ranking does not establish their early-anime arcs in enough detail to place them confidently. Likewise, Meowth is a central speaking character in the Team Rocket trio, but he is a Pokémon, not a human, so he falls outside this list’s stated scope.

How to read the placements

A ranking that gives more weight to screen time might move Jessie and James upward; one that emphasizes mentorship could place Professor Oak higher. The order here instead rewards how much a character shapes the premise, the traveling group, or the recurring story engine. None of those weights turns an editorial list into an official consensus.
