Best AAC Bitrate and Channel Layout for Prerecorded YouTube Live Videos

For prerecorded playback into YouTube Live, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for an ordinary program. Choose 5.1 only for a correctly mapped surround mix and compatible ingest chain.

For a prerecorded program played into YouTube Live through RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for an ordinary two-channel mix. Use AAC 5.1 at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz only when the program is genuinely mixed and correctly mapped for surround sound and the entire ingest chain supports it. These are YouTube’s published Live encoder recommendations, applied to prerecorded playback; YouTube does not publish a separate audio bitrate for prerecorded Live sources. YouTube’s Live encoder settings and 5.1 streaming guidance explain the distinction.

Recommended AAC settings for prerecorded YouTube Live

Choose settings according to how you are sending the program. Playing a finished video through an encoder into a Live broadcast is Live ingestion, not a standard video upload. The recommended values differ.

Workflow Audio codec Channel layout Sample rate YouTube-recommended audio bitrate
RTMP/RTMPS Live ingestion, ordinary prerecorded program AAC Stereo (2.0) 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
RTMP/RTMPS Live ingestion, genuine surround program AAC 5.1 (six channels) 48 kHz 384 Kbps
HLS Live ingestion, genuine surround program AAC, AC3, or EAC3 5.1 48 kHz 384 Kbps
Standard video upload, not Live ingestion AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio Stereo or Stereo + 5.1 48 kHz 384 Kbps stereo; 512 Kbps 5.1

The Live values are platform recommendations, not evidence that raising the bitrate improves the audio YouTube delivers. The upload settings are included to prevent using the wrong workflow’s table. YouTube Live encoder guidance; YouTube 5.1 guidance; YouTube upload encoding guidance.

Choose stereo or 5.1 based on the actual mix

Use stereo for a normal two-channel program

For documentaries, interviews, narration, music, and other conventional two-channel programs, send a correctly formed left/right stereo pair. Stereo is the documented default path for an ordinary program and avoids asking YouTube or the encoder to interpret an arbitrary multichannel layout.

Use 5.1 only for a correctly mapped surround mix

YouTube’s 5.1 layout comprises front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, and a low-frequency-effects channel. Preserve that assignment through playback, encoding, and ingestion. A file having more than two audio channels is not, by itself, a reason to stream in 5.1: the mix and channel map must actually represent 5.1.

YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 Live input; other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. Its guidance does not specify a universal downmix matrix, so do not assume an unconventional layout will downmix as intended. YouTube’s 5.1 streaming guidance.

Protocol and stream-key considerations for 5.1

  • RTMP/RTMPS: YouTube supports 5.1 ingestion only with AAC.
  • HLS: YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 for 5.1. If AAC is required, select AAC.
  • Stream key: YouTube says automatic 5.1 detection and production rely on creating a stream key with manual resolution settings turned off. Check the current Live Control Room instructions when creating or changing a key.
  • Encoder compatibility: YouTube names OBS and Videon EdgeCaster among compatible encoders for Live 5.1. This is a compatibility listing, not an endorsement or a guarantee for every configuration.

See YouTube’s 5.1 setup and compatibility details before configuring surround ingestion.

Preflight the prerecorded playback chain

  1. Confirm the workflow. If the finished file is being played into a Live broadcast, use the Live ingestion settings above. If you are uploading it as a normal video, use the upload row instead.
  2. Verify the source layout. Confirm the file and playout chain carry the intended channels. Use stereo for an ordinary two-channel program; use 5.1 only when the mix and six-channel assignment are correct.
  3. Set AAC parameters. For RTMP/RTMPS stereo, set 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For RTMP/RTMPS 5.1, set 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
  4. For 5.1, verify the whole path. Confirm the protocol supports the codec and layout, check the stream-key configuration for YouTube’s 5.1 detection instructions, and ensure channels have not been reordered or collapsed upstream.
  5. Test a representative segment. Include the program’s normal motion and audio, then inspect YouTube Live stream health before depending on the configuration for an event. YouTube recommends testing first; its API health messages can flag unsupported codecs, excessive audio bitrate, and unsupported channel counts. Live encoder settings; Live stream health and error messages.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

  • Audio is missing or the stream reports an unsupported codec: Check that the encoder is actually sending AAC for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 and that the configured output matches the selected workflow.
  • YouTube reports an excessive audio bitrate: Set the encoder to the recommended bitrate for the layout—128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1—instead of assuming a higher value is better.
  • Audio is collapsed, misplaced, or converted unreliably: Check the channel count and mapping end to end. Use a standard stereo pair or supported 5.1, rather than an unsupported intermediate layout.
  • 5.1 is not detected or produced as expected: Recheck the stream key’s manual resolution setting against YouTube’s current 5.1 instructions, plus encoder compatibility and channel assignment.
  • The settings seem wrong for the file: Establish whether you are streaming the file live or uploading it as a normal video. The upload recommendations use 48 kHz and different bitrate values.

For diagnostics, consult YouTube’s Live API error and health messages alongside the encoder’s own output indicators.
