David Bradberry, a former Below Deck deckhand, told BBC News that he was led to believe a modeling opportunity was available before being pressured into sex by an intermediary connected to Abercrombie & Fitch and later having sex with the company’s former CEO, Mike Jeffries. Those are Bradberry’s allegations, reported by the BBC and also pleaded in a civil complaint; they have not been established as facts by a court.
What David Bradberry told the BBC
In BBC News and BBC Panorama reporting published on October 2, 2023, Bradberry said he was 23 in 2010 when an agent introduced him to James Jacobson, whom the BBC described as a gatekeeper to Abercrombie’s owners. Bradberry said sex was not mentioned when they were introduced. He said Jacobson raised the possibility of being photographed by Bruce Weber, then Abercrombie’s official photographer, but made a meeting with the company or Jeffries conditional on oral sex. Bradberry said Jacobson gave him $500 afterward.
“I was paralysed,” Bradberry told the BBC. “It was like he was selling fame. And the price was compliance.”
Bradberry also told the BBC that he accepted an invitation to a daytime event at Jeffries’s Hamptons home because he believed Jeffries might help his modeling career. He said he spoke with Jeffries and Matthew Smith, Jeffries’s partner, about his modeling ambitions. Bradberry said Jeffries then held poppers under his nose and later had sex with him. He described the setting as secluded and said staff were present; he told the BBC he did not feel safe saying no or expressing discomfort.

What the BBC reported about the wider investigation
The BBC said eight men told its reporters that they had attended events involving Jeffries and Smith. It reported obtaining emails, flight tickets and detailed travel itineraries that supported key points in accounts, and said it interviewed dozens of other sources, including former household staff. These are descriptions of the BBC’s reporting and source material, not findings by a court.
Among the men the BBC interviewed about recruitment, half said they had initially been misled about the nature of the events or had not been told sex was involved. Others said they knew the events would be sexual but did not know exactly what would be expected. The BBC reported that all the men it spoke with were paid and all but one said they felt harmed. These figures describe that interview group only; they are not representative statistics about a broader population.

What the court cases do—and do not—establish
Bradberry’s civil complaint
Bradberry filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on October 27, 2023. It alleges a false modeling-recruitment pretext, sexual abuse and trafficking, and names defendants. A complaint sets out a plaintiff’s allegations; it is not a judicial determination that those allegations are true. Details in the pleading should therefore be understood as claims made in the case, distinct from Bradberry’s separately reported BBC account.
The federal criminal prosecution
An August 20, 2026 opinion and order found Jeffries competent to proceed in the federal criminal case. The court described a 16-count indictment charging sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. A competency ruling concerns whether a defendant can proceed in court; it is not a verdict and does not resolve guilt or the truth of the allegations.

A Law360 report dated August 27, 2026 said the trial had been pushed to January 4, 2027. That is a reported schedule, not a guarantee that the date will remain unchanged.
A separate civil case
A separate John Doe civil case against Abercrombie & Fitch, Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson remained stayed pending the criminal case under a March 31, 2026 order. The court denied a motion to transfer venue. The order recites the plaintiffs’ claims but does not decide whether they are true.

Who Bradberry is from Below Deck
A 2013 Bravo article identifies Bradberry as a second deckhand on Below Deck. It also reports that he discussed having spent a brief period in adult films, quoting him as saying he lived without regrets while also describing the period as something he was not proud of and did not like to dwell on. This is brief biographical context about his public profile; it is not corroboration of the later allegations.
