After criticism over the historical context, she apologized for not researching it beforehand, condemned the campaign’s lack of sensitivity and said, “Hate has no place here.” Adidas said the association was unintentional, apologized for the distress and said it would revise the campaign.
Why the Adidas SL 72 campaign drew criticism
Adidas Originals launched the campaign earlier in July 2024 to promote the return of the SL 72, a shoe first released in 1972. The campaign featured Hadid holding a floral bouquet and wearing the sneakers. The year and Olympics framing attracted criticism because the 1972 Munich Olympics were marked by an attack on the Israeli team.

The attack killed 11 Israeli athletes and one West German police officer. RTÉ’s report, based on the Press Association, identifies the Palestinian group Black September as responsible. The campaign’s association with the Olympic year therefore raised concerns about the sensitivity of using that context in a shoe promotion.
