Being Muslim After 9/11 is a 2026 English-language investigative documentary by Mobeen Azhar and Masood Khan. It explores what it means to be Muslim in modern Britain, while also examining how journalists’ choices about covering extremism have shaped public narratives. The Guardian’s review presents it as a searching film about Islamophobia, identity and the costs of reporting on a community from the inside.
What is Being Muslim After 9/11 about?
The documentary follows Azhar and Khan as they speak with people across the Muslim community about how life, identity and belonging have changed in Britain since the September 11 attacks. Dartmouth Films describes the film as an exploration of what it means to be Muslim in modern Britain. Its scope reaches beyond a single event: the filmmakers connect the post-9/11 period with questions that continue to shape British public life. Dartmouth Films’ official film page lists it as a 2026 English-language investigative documentary.
Azhar has described the events of September 2001 as a major reason he pursued journalism, and says he had not spoken publicly about that motivation before making the film. He calls the project both “therapeutic and devastating,” describing it as a temperature reading and a wake-up call. Those remarks frame the documentary as personal as well as political: its subject is not only how Britain has treated Muslims, but how a journalist revisits the choices that helped shape his own career.
Why does the film scrutinize journalism?
Jack Seale’s review in The Guardian identifies the documentary’s most challenging thread as its examination of reporting on extremism. Community leaders Alyas Karmani and Farasat Latif confront Azhar over earlier coverage they say gave an unrepresentative fringe too much attention. The review describes Azhar and co-director Masood Khan debating those decisions rather than treating them as settled or inconsequential.

The question is not simply whether extremism should be reported. It is how editorial choices—what receives attention, what is left out, and whose voices are presented as representative—can affect the way audiences understand an entire community. The film turns that problem back on its makers, asking them to account for how journalism can illuminate genuine concerns while also reinforcing a distorted picture.
Azhar’s conversations with Salma Yaqoob and Ivan, a reformed former English Defence League organiser, give the review’s account a range of perspectives. Seale also describes the documentary in the context of anti-Muslim hostility, Yaqoob’s recollection of the 2003 anti-war demonstration, attacks in 2017 and Britain’s political climate in 2026. These are elements of the film and interviewees’ recollections as reported by Seale, not a comprehensive historical account in themselves. Read Seale’s review in The Guardian.

What makes this documentary distinctive?
Seale characterizes the film’s subject as wider and more difficult than Azhar’s earlier work. Its distinctive move is to combine a discussion of British Muslim identity and belonging with an uncomfortable look at the filmmaker’s own professional history. Rather than ask only how the media portray Muslims, the documentary also asks what happens when journalists revisit the stories they chose to tell and the voices they elevated.
- A long view: It links experiences since September 2001 to questions about Britain in 2026.
- Self-examination: Azhar is challenged directly about the consequences of earlier reporting.
- Multiple perspectives: Community leaders, Salma Yaqoob and Ivan appear in the conversations described by the review.
- An unresolved tension: The film considers both the need to report on extremism and the risk of making a fringe seem representative.
