BBC Factual and BBC Scotland have announced JK Rowling, a two-part documentary series made by Rogan Scotland for BBC Two, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer. The programme is set to follow Rowling’s path from aspiring writer to internationally influential author and examine her later public interventions and contested legacy. The announcement report gives no transmission date.
What the documentary will cover
The series uses Rowling’s life and work to explore changes in British culture, politics and technology. According to Prolific North’s October 13, 2026 report, its two episodes have distinct focuses.
Episode one: childhood, writing and literary success
The first episode is described as tracing Rowling’s bookish childhood, her writing in Edinburgh cafés and her literary success. It will consider Harry Potter’s impact on children’s publishing and reading, as well as the books’ place in Britain’s cultural identity.
Episode two: politics and public debate
The second episode follows Rowling’s growing role as a public political voice. The topics listed include Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity, set against social media and culture-war disputes. The report characterizes her public legacy as contested; supporters and critics differ in how they interpret her statements and their consequences.

Why the BBC says it is telling the story now
Simon Young said the series arrives “Thirty years after the publication of the first Harry Potter book,” presenting that anniversary as a timely point to examine Rowling’s literary stature and her polarising public profile. That is Young’s statement as quoted in the announcement report, rather than a separately verified date calculation.
