Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened to $111,003,345 in U.S. and Canadian theaters, giving it the second-biggest September opening weekend on record. It trailed It, which opened to $123.4 million in September 2017; the sequel did not set the all-time September opening record or a verified personal opening record for director Tim Burton.
What box-office record did Beetlejuice 2 set?
The record claim needs a precise label: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had the second-highest September opening weekend, not the biggest September opening ever. TheWrap reported the ranking on Sept. 8, 2024, when the sequel’s opening was estimated at about $110 million. Box Office Mojo’s release page lists the final domestic opening figure as $111,003,345.

The September leader remained It, whose 2017 opening weekend was $123.4 million, according to TheWrap. The sequel was the second September release to open above $100 million, the outlet reported. Those figures make it a major September launch, but they do not establish that Burton set a career-best opening across all his films.
How much did Beetlejuice Beetlejuice make opening weekend?
Box Office Mojo lists the film’s domestic opening at $111,003,345. Warner Bros. opened it on Sept. 6, 2024, in 4,575 theaters. TheWrap’s contemporaneous weekend report described $13.5 million in Thursday previews, $28.3 million on Friday, and a 45% rise to $41.8 million on Saturday. Those daily figures were reported during the opening weekend and may not sum precisely to the later database total because estimates and reporting conventions can differ.

The launch also stood out against the rest of that weekend’s releases: TheWrap reported that no other film grossed more than $10 million.

Did the film stay at No. 1 after its opening?
Yes. The Associated Press reported on Sept. 22, 2024, that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice led the North American box office for a third consecutive weekend. It earned $26 million in that third weekend and had passed $226 million domestically after three weeks, according to the AP report.
That report also put the film’s effect on the month in context. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “September has been a bit of a sleepy month and with around 47% of the revenue being generated by this single film.” The 47% described the September box office at the time of the Sept. 22 report; it was not a final or recurring market-share figure.

Why the headline’s “new record” needs context
A box-office record can refer to a particular month, opening weekend, territory, or a filmmaker’s career. Here, the supported distinction is the September opening ranking: the sequel came in second, behind It. TheWrap also noted that Warner Bros. held the three highest September opening weekends at the time, a studio-level comparison that does not make this a Tim Burton-only record.
Box Office Mojo lists the film as PG-13, with a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Those release details help identify the title, but they do not change the meaning of its box-office distinction: a strong second-place September opening, followed by three weekends at No. 1 in North America.
