Blob Beats turned remixed classical music into a falling-note arcade game starring the singing Blobs, while Beethoven Beats matched a rhythm you tapped with an excerpt from a Beethoven work. In 2026, Blob Beats is still listed in Google’s Play directory; Beethoven Beats is not visible there, so its current availability is uncertain.
Google’s classical-music games were two different experiences
The headline can make “Beethoven and Blobs” sound like one game. It was not. Google Arts & Culture presented two related experiments with different mechanics and purposes.
| Experience | Core interaction | Musical focus |
|---|---|---|
| Blob Beats | Hit falling notes in time | Classical works rearranged as an arcade-style rhythm game |
| Beethoven Beats | Tap a short rhythm and receive a musical match | Discovering Beethoven through a personalized listening prompt |
Google’s Blob Beats page describes the first as “Classical music, Arcade style.” The launch account for both experiments appeared on December 13, 2022, in Chrome Unboxed.
How Blob Beats works
Blob Beats is a browser-based rhythm game built around the characters from Blob Opera. Notes fall toward lanes, and you press at the right moment to keep the performance going. The design combines familiar arcade timing with arrangements of classical pieces rather than asking players to read notation or understand music theory first.

The 2022 launch report described four keyboard lanes using S, D, F and G, and reported five classical opera songs. Those details describe the version covered at launch; Google does not establish that the same controls or song count remain unchanged today.
Blob Beats is therefore more than a music player, but less than a conventional music lesson. It gives unfamiliar works an immediate physical structure—watch, anticipate and strike—while the facts supply a little historical and musical context.
How Beethoven Beats turns tapping into Beethoven
Beethoven Beats used a much simpler interaction. According to the 2022 launch report, you tapped a control to create a beat lasting roughly four seconds. The experiment then matched that rhythm to a Beethoven composition and played an excerpt. An “explore” option took you toward the full version or wider information about the selected work.
- Open the Beethoven Beats experiment.
- Tap to make a short rhythm, approximately four seconds long.
- Let the system select a Beethoven passage that fits the rhythm.
- Listen to the excerpt.
- Choose Explore to continue with the work or its fuller recording.
The available account does not specify the matching algorithm, the number of Beethoven works, how the recordings were delivered, or whether the experiment remains online. It is more accurate to call this rhythm-based discovery than to say that the system composed new Beethoven music.

Google Arts & Culture made Beethoven Beats with Deutsche Grammophon. That partnership connected a playful web interface with a major classical label’s repertoire, giving the tap-to-listen idea a route into an established catalog. The available information does not establish licensing terms, exclusivity or catalog size.
The machine-learning experiment behind the Blobs
Blob Beats borrows its characters from Blob Opera, a Google Arts & Culture experiment created by artist David Li with Google Arts & Culture. Blob Opera is important to the story because the Blobs are not merely cartoon buttons that trigger isolated vocal recordings.
Google says four opera singers recorded 16 hours of material for a machine-learning model. Users control four voice parts in real time:
- Dragging a Blob vertically changes its pitch.
- Moving it forward or backward changes the vowel sound.
- A second model lets the Blobs respond to the user and harmonize with the input.
In other words, the singers’ recordings were training material for a model representing how opera singing behaves. The interface generates responsive vocal behavior from that model; it is not simply replaying the singers’ performances on demand. Google also warns that Blob Opera may not perform optimally on older devices.

Can you still play them in 2026?
Availability differs between the experiments. Google’s current Arts & Culture Play directory still lists Blob Beats and Blob Opera among its interactive experiences. Beethoven Beats is not visible in the directory at the time of writing. That absence does not prove permanent removal, but its current public status cannot be confirmed.
To try what is presently surfaced:
- Go to the official Play directory.
- Open the Music category or use the page’s search function.
- Select Blob Beats and start it from a desktop browser if possible.
Because these are web experiments rather than downloadable games, the interface may change. Screenshots and keyboard directions from 2022 may not match the current version. If Beethoven Beats does not appear, treat it as an archived or no-longer-surfaced experiment rather than assuming there is a hidden current link.
What makes the experiments notable?
Their strongest idea is not simply that Google made a game. They use play to reduce the intimidation factor around opera and classical music.
- Rhythm is an entry point: A player can respond to timing without knowing a composer’s biography or reading a score.
- Characters lower the barrier: Singing Blobs make an unfamiliar vocal tradition feel approachable to children and first-time listeners.
- Facts add a learning layer: Composer and work information appears alongside the activity.
- Machine learning is experienced directly: In Blob Opera, users hear the model react as they move the characters instead of encountering an abstract explanation of artificial intelligence.
These are design benefits, not evidence that the games improve concentration, coordination or musical ability. A high score demonstrates timing within the game; it does not demonstrate understanding of a complex composition.

Is this a useful way to learn classical music?
It can be a useful invitation, especially for a newcomer who might not choose a symphony or opera recording unaided. Blob Beats makes pulse and phrasing tangible, while Beethoven Beats turns a personal rhythm into a reason to hear a Beethoven passage.
The trade-off is simplification. Arcade scoring reduces a large musical work to successful inputs, and a short matched excerpt cannot provide the context of an entire piece. The most productive approach is to use the game as a doorway, then follow its composer information or Explore path into a complete recording and further listening.

If the experiment does not load
- Refresh the official page in a current browser.
- Temporarily disable an aggressive script or content blocker for the page, then reload.
- Check that the browser is allowed to play audio and that the device is not muted.
If controls do not match older instructions
The S-D-F-G layout was reported for the 2022 Blob Beats release. The current interface may use different controls, so follow the on-screen prompts rather than relying on an old screenshot.
If performance is poor
Try a newer device or close other demanding tabs. Google explicitly cautions that older hardware may not run Blob Opera optimally, and similar browser audio or machine-learning effects can be sensitive to limited resources.

Accessibility limits
Timing games can be difficult for people with motor, hearing, visual-processing or timing impairments. The available descriptions do not verify captions, remappable controls, reduced-motion settings, screen-reader support or specific contrast options. “No singing skills required” for Blob Opera should not be read as a guarantee of universal accessibility.
Other Google Arts & Culture music experiments
If Beethoven Beats is unavailable, the same Play directory offers other music-oriented experiences. They are not direct replacements, but they provide similarly low-barrier ways to explore sound and creativity:
- Blob Opera
- Assisted Melody
- Paint With Music
- Play a Kandinsky
- Musical Canvas
The directory’s contents can change, so open the current listing rather than relying on an old catalog.
Why the “Beats” still matter
Blob Beats and Beethoven Beats show two complementary ways to introduce classical music online: one turns listening into an arcade challenge, and the other turns a user’s own rhythm into a discovery tool. Their value lies in making the first encounter easy and playful, while their limits are equally clear. Neither replaces a full recording, concert or music lesson, and Beethoven Beats may no longer be publicly surfaced. For readers in 2026, Blob Beats is the experiment with a confirmed current listing; the Beethoven project is best understood as a notable 2022 Google Arts & Culture experiment whose present status remains uncertain.
