Directed by Chantel Concei and produced by Kate Downie, it premiered at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival in July 2024. Costarella died in April 2025, and the film later appeared in a City of Vincent community screening in March 2026. The sources available do not establish where it can be watched now.
What is Becoming Aurelio about?
The City of Vincent describes Becoming Aurelio as a film about Costarella’s life in the City of Vincent, including his fashion-label triumphs, mental health journey and art therapy. Its subject is not simply the rise of a designer: the project brings his creative success into conversation with the personal challenges behind it. The City lists Chantel Concei as director and Kate Downie as producer. City of Vincent film project listing.
In a June 2024 interview, Concei said she hoped the film would help people struggling with mental health come forward and talk. Downie anticipated that audiences might be surprised by the extent of Costarella’s experience and hoped the film would help them understand that support is available. Those are the filmmakers’ aims and expectations, not claims that the documentary measures treatment outcomes. PerthNow, June 13, 2024.

Why does the film connect fashion and mental health?
Costarella closed his label in 2017 after nearly 34 years in fashion. A report at the time described the pressures of continuing his career while managing his mental health. That history gives the documentary’s two strands their context: the label’s achievements and the personal cost of sustaining a demanding career. The film should not be read as announcing a label revival or a current clothing collection. The West Australian, 2017.
