James Gunn’s DC Universe has a Batman project: The Brave and the Bold, the film DC Studios says will introduce its Batman and Robin. DC describes it as an unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s Batman comics. It is separate from Matt Reeves’s Batman continuity. Gunn said in August 2026 that the project was “in no way on hold,” but the sources cited here do not establish a release date or production start.
Who is the DCU Batman?
The announced DCU Batman film is The Brave and the Bold. DC Studios introduced it in its January 31, 2023 slate announcement as the project through which “the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series.” DC Studios’ announcement does not name the actor playing Batman or give a release date.
What is The Brave and the Bold about?
DC’s confirmed description is deliberately limited: Batman and Robin, a father-son story, and inspiration from Grant Morrison’s comic series. That wording points to Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne as the father and son, with Damian associated with the Robin role. But DC has not published a detailed plot synopsis, identified a particular Morrison issue or story arc, or said the film will adapt any comic beat for beat.
Morrison’s work is useful as optional background, not a required reading list: DC has named the writer’s Batman comics as inspiration without specifying which story the film will follow.

Is Robert Pattinson the DCU Batman?
No, based on the announced projects. Robert Pattinson stars in Matt Reeves’s separate Batman continuity, while The Brave and the Bold is the Batman project for the main DCU. DC’s 2023 announcement listed the two projects separately: The Brave and the Bold as part of the new DCU slate and Reeves’s The Batman – Part II as a distinct project. A January 2026 report also describes Reeves’s continuity as separate from the main DCU. ComicBook.com’s report does not announce a crossover or identify Pattinson as the DCU Batman.
Is The Brave and the Bold on hold?
James Gunn said in August 2026 that the film was “in no way on hold,” responding to a claim that development had paused because of the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger. GamesRadar’s report quotes Gunn’s clarification.

- Classic comic-inspired black costume
- Premium poseability throughout
- Interchangeable heads and hands
- Soft cape for dynamic displays
That status does not mean filming has begun. GamesRadar also recounts Gunn saying in July 2025 that the team was working on a script and that he was involved. In January 2026, when asked about claims that the screenplay was complete, Gunn replied, “Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn’t finished.” ComicBook.com reported that exchange. These dated comments establish development activity, not a production start or a final screenplay.

No release date is confirmed in the cited announcement or reports. A rumored year or window should not be treated as official unless DC Studios announces one. The sources cited here also do not establish a production start, cast, or which specific Morrison story will inform the film.
