Barnes & Noble opened its new Bellevue Square bookstore in Bellevue, Washington, on Jan. 15, 2025. The 8,000-square-foot store brought the chain back to Bellevue’s urban core after its previous downtown-area location closed in 2022, with books joined by vinyl records, magazines, games, toys and gifts, according to GeekWire’s opening-day report.
What opened at Bellevue Square?
The new bookstore occupies 8,000 square feet at Bellevue Square, the shopping center in Bellevue, Washington. GeekWire’s Jan. 15, 2025 report described book sections and thematic display tables alongside vinyl records, magazines, games, toys and gift items. It reported that shoppers visited on opening day to browse and buy.
The store’s manager, David Rossiter, was described by GeekWire as a 20-year Barnes & Noble veteran. He explained the appeal of the chain’s physical shops this way: “To me, when I walk into a mall or town square, I’m always like, ‘Where’s the fun location to shop?’ That’s how I feel about our stores.”
How did the opening fit Bellevue’s bookstore history?
The Bellevue Square opening marked Barnes & Noble’s return to Bellevue’s urban core. GeekWire reported that the company’s previous store there closed in 2022 after 29 years. It also noted that Barnes & Noble had a location at Crossroads shopping center, roughly 2.5 miles from Bellevue Square.

Why did some shoppers still want physical books?
People interviewed at the opening described benefits of browsing that differ from searching for a known title online. Kay Neill said, “I like to be able to look at books.” Peyton McQuain put the distinction this way: “I think online you kind of search for something that you already know you want, and it’s easier to explore in a bookstore.” Those comments reflect individual shoppers’ views, not a representative survey.
Browsing and recommendations
Physical shelves let shoppers encounter books outside a preselected search, while display tables and staff can help surface options. At the Bellevue opening, Rossiter’s description of a bookstore as a fun place to shop echoed customers’ interest in exploring in person.

Travel guides and the details on the page
GeekWire reported that shopper Jinhua Lou browsed travel books for France and Portugal by Rick Steves and bought travel books. Lou said, “I could Google the destination, but Rick Steves probably has more experience than AI, I think.” That is Lou’s personal judgment, not a general comparison of guidebooks and online tools. A physical guide can also be inspected for its maps, layout and coverage before purchase; the report did not identify the exact titles or editions Lou bought.
