Barbra Streisand remembered Kris Kristofferson as an artist whose talent struck her before they worked together. After his death at 88, she recalled seeing him perform at Los Angeles’s Troubadour and said the experience helped her picture him in the script that became A Star Is Born.
Streisand’s first impression of Kristofferson
In a message reported after Kristofferson died at his home in Hawaii, Streisand recalled seeing him perform at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. “The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour club in L.A. I knew he was something special,” she said, according to the Associated Press on September 30, 2024.

ABC News’ Good Morning America added detail to the recollection: Streisand remembered Kristofferson performing barefoot and strumming a guitar. She said she thought he would be a strong choice for a script she was developing, which became the 1976 film A Star Is Born. That is Streisand’s account of the connection between the Troubadour performance and her casting idea, rather than a claim that the club appearance alone determined the film’s casting.

In the 1976 film, Streisand played Esther Hoffman and Kristofferson played John Norman Howard, an established musician whose relationship with Esther unfolds as her career rises. Their partnership made the film’s music central to the story as well as to Streisand’s later remembrance.

Streisand recalled singing “Evergreen” with Kristofferson in the movie. The song, which she wrote for the film’s main love theme, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, shared by Streisand and Paul Williams, according to CBS News. ABC/GMA’s transcription of Streisand’s message appears to say “sand” rather than “sang,” so that wording is not reproduced here as a direct quote.
Their 2019 reunion in London
The two performers met again onstage at Streisand’s Hyde Park concert in London on July 7, 2019. They sang “Lost Inside of You,” a song from A Star Is Born; CBS News reported the performance the following day. ABC/GMA also noted that Streisand had invited Kristofferson to perform the song with her.
The reunion gave their film connection a later public moment: they returned to a song associated with their characters and performed it together decades after the movie’s release.

Streisand’s reported tribute also addressed Kristofferson’s wife, Lisa. ABC/GMA reproduced her closing thoughts to Lisa and her description of the support she gave him. The message joined a personal expression of sympathy to the memories of a co-star and musician whose work she had admired from the beginning.
