Ruth Handler, a Mattel co-founder, was central to creating the doll, which was named after her daughter, Barbara. The first Barbie was an adult-fashion doll, and Smithsonian education material connects its design to the German adult doll Bild Lilli. The familiar origin stories offer overlapping explanations for Handler’s idea, but they are not identical accounts.
Who invented Barbie?
Ruth Handler co-founded Mattel with Elliot Handler and Harold Matson in 1945, according to Smithsonian Magazine. She was central to developing Barbie, which Mattel introduced in 1959. Handler named the doll after her daughter Barbara.
Handler’s idea also reflected a different kind of play. As Smithsonian Magazine recounts, she saw Barbara playing with paper dolls and imagined a doll that could let girls picture themselves in adult roles. Handler later described her philosophy this way: “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be,” she wrote in her 1994 autobiography. “Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.” Smithsonian Magazine quotes the autobiography.
Was Barbie based on a real person or Bild Lilli?
Barbie was not a portrait of one real woman. The doll was named for Barbara Handler, but its design drew on a different source: Smithsonian Education’s artifact analysis says Ruth and Elliot Handler based the first Barbie on Lilli, a German doll intended for adults.

Smithsonian Magazine recounts another strand of the origin story: Handler reportedly encountered an adult novelty doll while vacationing in Switzerland. The accounts involving Lilli, the Swiss encounter, and Barbara’s paper dolls are not interchangeable, and the available accounts do not establish a single definitive moment of inspiration. They do, however, place Barbie’s creation at the intersection of adult-doll designs and Handler’s idea of giving girls a doll through which to imagine adult possibilities.
What was the first Barbie like?
Unlike many American dolls of the period, which represented infants or children, the first Barbie was an adult-fashion doll. Smithsonian Education notes that market research before the commercial release found parents objected strongly to the doll’s coquettish appearance, while children responded favorably.

Barbie debuted in 1959. Smithsonian Magazine reports that 300,000 dolls were sold in the first year. The same magazine reported that Mattel shipped more than 86 million dolls from the Barbie universe in 2021. These are different measures—first-year sales and a later year’s shipments—so they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison.
When did Black Barbie arrive?
The first official Black Barbie was introduced in 1980 and designed by Kitty Black Perkins. That milestone followed earlier Black characters and dolls in the wider Barbie line: Smithsonian Magazine reports that Christie appeared in 1968 and that Mattel had previously released a Black version of Francie. Those releases are part of the broader history, but they are distinct from the 1980 official Black Barbie.

In Smithsonian Magazine’s June 2024 account, historian and former National Museum of American History curator Crystal Marie Moten called the release “a very important moment in mainstream doll history,” while emphasizing, “But it was not the starting point.” The article quotes Perkins explaining her motivation in the documentary Black Barbie: “There was a need for the little Black girl to really have something she could play with that looked like her. I wanted her to reflect the total look of a Black woman.” The documentary premiered on Netflix in June 2024; that date does not establish its current streaming availability.

No. The 2023 film includes a real historical figure, Ruth Handler, played by Rhea Perlman, but it is not a literal biography. TIME describes Greta Gerwig’s story as a fictional narrative set in Barbie Land. The film gives Handler an imaginative, spiritual role within that story; it should not be confused with the historical account of Mattel’s co-founder and Barbie’s creation.
