Norman “Dike” Dike survived World War II. Secondary biographical accounts online say that after the war he earned a law degree, worked as a lawyer and businessman, and later lived in Switzerland. Those accounts disagree on his death year, and no authoritative postwar record has been established, so the outline is reliable only as far as those sources go. The sections below separate what is reported from what is verified.
Who Dike was in Easy Company
Norman Staunton Dike Jr. was an Army officer associated with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, of the 101st Airborne Division. An online transcription of Stephen E. Ambrose’s history of the company describes him as Lieutenant Heyliger’s replacement in command and says he came from Division Headquarters. That is the most grounded wartime detail available, and it comes from a secondary transcription of a published history rather than from a personnel file.

Keep the sources apart. The HBO miniseries dramatizes this history, and its characterizations are not a source for Dike’s life, either during the war or afterward. Ambrose’s book covers the company’s wartime service; it does not, in the material reviewed, provide a full account of what Dike did after leaving the unit.
What later sources say about his postwar life
Most of what is publicly repeated about Dike’s later years comes from two community-written biographies. Neither cites a primary document that could be checked directly, so treat each claim below as reported rather than confirmed.

Education and law
A community wiki entry says Dike earned a law degree from Yale. The same entry says he later retired from the military as a lieutenant colonel. This is the only source found for both claims, and no independent corroboration was located.
Business and residence in Switzerland
A military fandom wiki entry reports that Dike worked as a lawyer and businessman and that he lived in Switzerland. The same entry gives his death as June 23, 1989, in Rolle, a town in the canton of Vaud. It is a derivative biography, so it is only as strong as its own sources, which it does not name in a way that can be checked here.
Why the death year is disputed
Online listings do not agree on when Dike died. The table below shows the competing claims and how far each can be trusted.
| Claim | Where it appears | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Died June 23, 1989, in Rolle, Switzerland | Military fandom wiki entry | Reported; derivative source, obituary not located |
| Died in 1985 | Other online listings without a named primary source | Unverified; conflicts with the 1989 date |
Until a death record or obituary is found, neither year should be presented as fact. The 1989 date has the more specific supporting detail, but specificity alone does not confirm it.

What the record does not establish
- A reliable, complete account of his postwar career. The law, business, and Swiss details come from secondary biographies, not from employment or court records.
- The circumstances of his death.
- Any explanation of his postwar path that goes beyond these reported facts. The sources do not support a psychological reading of his choices, and his wartime role should not be used to explain what he did afterward.
- Any direct quotation from Dike about his life after the war. None was found in the material reviewed.
Leaving Easy Company did not, on the available evidence, end his military service. The community biography that reports a law degree also says he retired as a lieutenant colonel, but that claim is uncorroborated.

How to verify the postwar details
- Find the obituary that the derivative biographies appear to rely on. Search newspaper archives for Dike’s name alongside Rolle or Switzerland, and check the 1985 and 1989 dates separately.
- Look for a civil death record from Rolle (Vaud) or a Swiss registry entry, which would settle the year.
- Check Yale Law School alumni or degree records to confirm the law degree.
- Request Army retirement orders or related personnel records through the National Archives, which would confirm the rank at retirement and the date.
Further reading on Easy Company
- Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. This is the source for Dike’s wartime role in the company. It is not a biography of his postwar life.
