Ballard is a Bosch-universe crime drama led by Maggie Q as LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, who runs a cold-case division. Its season-one cast also includes Titus Welliver as retired detective Harry Bosch, who works with Ballard, and a team of detectives and allies. Here’s who plays the principal characters and how the series connects to the Bosch stories.
Who plays Renée Ballard?
Maggie Q plays Renée Ballard, the central detective in the series. Ballard leads an LAPD cold-case division, a role that shifts her from the detective audiences saw in Bosch: Legacy to the head of a team handling unresolved cases. Amazon’s official series listing describes a season-one investigation involving a serial killer and a police conspiracy.
Who is in the Ballard cast?
The season-one principal cast brings together Ballard’s unit, her family, and people connected to the cases. These are the key actor-character pairings in the cast guide; they are not a complete credit roll, and the actors do not necessarily have equal screen time.
| Character | Actor | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Renée Ballard | Maggie Q | Detective who leads the cold-case division. |
| Zamira Parker | Courtney Taylor | Member of Ballard’s unit. |
| Thomas Laffont | John Carroll Lynch | Member of the principal cast. |
| Ted Rawls | Michael Mosley | Member of the principal cast. |
| Colleen Hateras | Rebecca Field | Member of the principal cast; the cast guide spells the surname Hateras. |
| Martina Castro | Victoria Moroles | Member of the principal cast. |
| Tutu | Amy Hill | Ballard’s grandmother. |
| Robert Olivas | Ricardo Chavira | LAPD detective. |
| Jake Pearlman | Noah Bean | Councilman. |
| Nelson Hastings | Alain Uy | Member of the principal cast. |
| Captain Berchem | Hector Hugo | Captain. |
| Harry Bosch | Titus Welliver | Retired detective and Ballard ally. |
The actor-character pairings are listed in TheWrap’s cast guide. For episode-specific case details, Prime Video’s listing describes Ballard reopening a John Doe case, investigating Yulia Kravetz’s murder with Parker, and revisiting a 2006 fraternity death after a viral accusation.

Is Ballard a Bosch spinoff?
Yes. Ballard is part of the Bosch universe and continues Maggie Q’s character after her introduction in Bosch: Legacy. Titus Welliver returns as Harry Bosch, now retired, and becomes an ally to Ballard in a serial-killer investigation. Amazon’s interview with the cast and creators confirms the connection and explains the show’s cold-case focus.
Welliver described their relationship as a developing partnership: “They form this bond working together and she recognizes aspects of herself in Harry.” He added, “Harry sees Renee as a younger version of himself.”

Is Renée Ballard based on a real detective?
Author and executive producer Michael Connelly says the fictional character was inspired by Mitzi Roberts, a retired LAPD detective who consulted on his Bosch books. Roberts also became a producer and joined the show’s writing room. That connection is an inspiration for the character, not a claim that Ballard depicts Roberts’ real cases or career. In a statement on his official Ballard page, Connelly said: “But Renee Ballard is based on an actual LAPD detective, who recently retired, named Mitzi Roberts. I’ve known her for a long time and she was helping me on my Bosch books as a consultant.”
Which Michael Connelly books connect to Ballard?
Season one uses elements from Connelly’s Desert Star and “a bit from” The Dark Hours, according to the author’s official series page. These are source-material connections, not a scene-by-scene adaptation map: the television story reshapes Ballard’s work, with Connelly noting that “Ballard has gone from being a detective in my books to leading a cold-case unit on our new show.” Both novels offer relevant reading for viewers interested in the character, but neither should be treated as a transcript of the season’s plot.
