What is Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife about?
Netflix’s docuseries follows Paolo Macchiarini, whose reputation rested on experimental synthetic windpipe transplants, alongside patients’ families, colleagues who raised concerns, and journalist Benita Alexander, who became personally involved with him. The series examines both his medical work and the personal claims that came under scrutiny.

What did the court establish?
The documentary’s story has a consequential legal outcome. In a June 21, 2023 summary of its judgment, the Svea Court of Appeal said Macchiarini was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for three cases of gross assault concerning operations on three patients at Karolinska Hospital in 2011 and 2012. The court found that he removed the patients’ tracheas and replaced them with synthetic ones, causing physical injuries and suffering, and that the procedures were not performed in accordance with science and proven experience. It also found criminal intent.

The court distinguished the circumstances of one operation: “The Court of Appeal finds that the surgery on the third patient was done in a case of emergency but, despite this, was indefensible.” These are the appellate court’s findings in those three cases, not a general finding about every procedure associated with Macchiarini.

The court’s own summary is the appropriate source for what was legally established in the criminal case.
Is Bad Surgeon really number one on Netflix?
