What happens in “How to Pick a Prick”?
Ian betrays Eva and Blánaid
The episode begins with Ian draining Blánaid’s bank account and disappearing. Before he goes, he sends Houlihan CCTV footage he copied from Angelica’s house. The move appears designed to turn suspicion toward the Garveys while obscuring his own part in what has happened.

But the police investigation has a critical problem: Angelica is alive. With no murder victim, Houlihan cannot keep the sisters as murder suspects, and Fergal orders their release. Angelica says little to Ursula or the police, leaving the sisters with questions rather than an explanation.
The sisters try to identify Ian
The Garveys connect Ian to the person for whom Grace withdrew money. They also have to accept that their assumptions about Angelica were wrong. Eva is hit particularly hard: she trusted Ian and made him a trustee of Blánaid’s account. Her guilt over that decision sits alongside the practical problem of finding him.

With help from Joe and Roger, the sisters learn that Ian bets on horses and uses the name Cormac. Eva uses a burner phone to track him down. Her sisters warn her not to go alone, but she does.
Houlihan’s investigation takes a new direction
Houlihan has reason to scrutinize Fergal, including the money he took from Grace’s car. She chooses not to expose him after seeing him with his daughter at his retirement party. That decision complicates her position: she is still an investigator at odds with the Garveys, but she is not simply pursuing every possible accusation.

Becka considers what comes next
Becka also asks Joe for information about Ian and reconnects with Matt. Matt believes she will be a good mother, but he does not want to break up the family she has with Joe. Becka recognizes that she needs to let go of Matt and move forward with Joe, giving the episode a quieter counterpoint to Eva’s escalating danger.

The ending leaves Eva isolated just as the season approaches its finale. She has acted on her own to confront the man who betrayed her, and the episode stops with Ian in control of the immediate situation. It is a cliffhanger built from the betrayal itself: Eva trusted him with Blánaid’s money, and now she has put herself within reach of him.

The title’s reference to picking a “prick” recalls Grace’s history of choosing harmful men, but the episode widens that pattern to include Eva’s misplaced trust in Ian. The sisters’ response is shaped by shame and self-blame as much as anger. Houlihan’s restraint toward Fergal and renewed focus on Ian, meanwhile, suggest she may matter differently in the finale. These are readings of the episode’s events, not official creator commentary.
