Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth film in Sony’s Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys (1995), Bad Boys II (2003), and Bad Boys for Life (2020). Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, who are forced to become fugitives while trying to clear the name of their late police captain.
The film opened in U.S. theaters on June 7, 2024. Sony currently lists it for Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, although retailer availability, prices, and digital rights vary by country and can change.
What is Bad Boys: Ride or Die about?
Bad Boys: Ride or Die is an action comedy and direct sequel to Bad Boys for Life. The story brings detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett back together for another investigation involving Miami law enforcement, criminal networks, and a threat to the reputation of someone they trusted.
After their late police captain is connected to drug cartels, Mike and Marcus set out to clear his name. The investigation quickly turns against them, leaving Miami’s veteran detectives on the run and operating outside normal police protection.

The premise preserves the franchise’s familiar combination of explosive action, police-procedural complications, buddy-cop arguments, and comedy. It also continues the family and legacy threads introduced in the previous movie, including the return of Armando, played by Jacob Scipio.
Spoiler boundary: The sections below remain spoiler-light unless clearly marked. They identify Armando’s importance to the story but do not explain the investigation’s resolution.

Sony’s movie page lists retailer pathways including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble, as well as digital services such as Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core. Those listings are useful starting points, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that the movie is available in every territory or that a particular retailer still has the same edition in stock.

Which home format should you choose?
The 4K Ultra HD edition is the clearest choice for viewers with compatible home-theater equipment who want the highest-resolution physical version Sony promotes. Sony notes that 4K HDR playback requires a 4K UHD television, an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and suitable high-speed HDMI 2.0a cables.
If you do not have a 4K setup, the standard Blu-ray edition is the more practical physical option. DVD remains available as a lower-hardware format, although its picture quality is below both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.

- Alexander Ludwig as Dorn: Part of the team working alongside the veteran detectives.
- Paola Núñez as Rita: A returning character connected to the Miami police operation.

Rating and runtime
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| U.S. rating | R |
| Official rating reasons | Strong violence, language throughout, and some sexual references |
| Runtime | Approximately 1 hour 55 minutes, or 115 minutes |
| Genre | Action and comedy |
The R rating makes the movie intended for adult viewers rather than family viewing. Its content is consistent with the franchise’s action-comedy identity, but parents and guardians should rely on the official rating reasons when deciding whether it is appropriate for younger viewers.
Reception: what did critics and audiences think?
The film’s reception was mixed to positive rather than universally acclaimed. In the retrieved Rotten Tomatoes snapshot, Bad Boys: Ride or Die had a 65% Tomatometer score from 252 reviews and a 96% Popcornmeter score from more than 5,000 verified ratings.
Those figures are changeable and should be rechecked before publication or citation as current scores. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus emphasizes that Smith and Lawrence remain effective together, while also noting that the sequel pushes the franchise’s excesses further.
That split captures the movie’s main appeal and its principal limitation. Viewers who enjoy the leads’ established chemistry, large action sequences, and intentionally heightened tone are likely to find the formula satisfying. Viewers less receptive to escalating spectacle and absurdity may find the story less convincing than the performances.
Box office performance
Bad Boys: Ride or Die was made on an estimated production budget of approximately $100 million. Its reported opening weekend in the United States was about $56.5 million.
| Measure | The Numbers | Box Office Mojo |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic opening weekend | $56,527,324 | $56,527,324 |
| Domestic gross | $193,573,217 | $193,573,217 |
| International gross | $206,953,020 | $210,976,967 |
| Worldwide gross | $400,526,237 | $404,550,184 |
The two commonly cited box-office databases report the same domestic figures but different international and worldwide totals. The difference is a database-reporting discrepancy, not evidence that one movie had two separate releases. When quoting the total, identify the source rather than combining the figures.

The U.S. opening was below the opening for Bad Boys for Life, but the film still delivered a substantial worldwide theatrical result. The Associated Press characterized its approximately $56 million opening as strong while noting that it did not quite match the previous installment.

In the United States, Sony’s official movie page lists Bad Boys: Ride or Die through digital services and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The displayed digital pathways include Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core. Physical-retailer pathways include Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble.
Digital purchase, rental, subscription access, and physical ownership are different forms of availability. A service listed by Sony may offer a purchase or rental rather than subscription streaming, and the catalog can differ by country. Before paying, confirm whether you are renting or buying, the included audio and subtitle options, and whether the title can be downloaded or viewed only through the service.
For a physical purchase, compare the format with your equipment. The 4K disc needs an Ultra HD Blu-ray player and a compatible 4K HDR display; Blu-ray and DVD use different players and offer different picture quality. If you are collecting the series, also check whether a current Bad Boys movie collection includes all four films and which formats are actually in the package.

The films are best watched in release order because the character relationships and Armando’s storyline develop across the series:
- Bad Boys (1995)
- Bad Boys II (2003)
- Bad Boys for Life (2020)
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)
Ride or Die is a sequel, not a reboot. It continues Mike and Marcus’s partnership and follows up on characters and consequences from Bad Boys for Life. Watching the earlier films is not strictly required to understand the new investigation, but seeing the third movie gives the most useful context for Armando and the younger team.

Is Bad Boys: Ride or Die the same as Ride or Die?
No. Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the 2024 fourth Bad Boys movie starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. It should not be confused with the unrelated 2021 film titled Ride or Die.
