Republican lawmakers criticized his language, while conservative responses were mixed.
What Trump said about Rob Reiner
On December 15, the day after Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump wrote on Truth Social that they had died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others” through “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” He also said Reiner had been known to drive people “CRAZY” through his opposition to Trump. Axios reported the post and its wording.
Asked about it by reporters at the White House later that day, Trump stood by his remarks: “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.” The Associated Press reported his comments.
What investigators had said at the time
In December 15 coverage, the deaths were being investigated as an apparent homicide, and Nick Reiner had been arrested or was in custody on suspicion of murder. Those reports did not establish a motive. PolitiFact said police had not stated one or connected the deaths to Rob Reiner’s political views. Trump’s political explanation was therefore his assertion, not a conclusion attributed to investigators. PolitiFact’s contemporaneous account and ABC News’ report describe what was known then; they do not establish the later status or outcome of the criminal case.

Republican lawmakers criticized the post
Several Republican lawmakers objected to the tone or political framing:
- Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) called it “inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered.”
- Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wrote, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”
- Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) called the post “wrong.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson offered prayers for the Reiner family rather than directly criticizing Trump, ABC reported. ABC News covered the Republican responses; the Associated Press also reported Massie’s criticism.

Conservative reactions were not uniform
Axios reported that some pro-Trump commentators had called for compassion after the Reiners’ deaths, drawing comparisons with responses to Charlie Kirk’s killing. Following Trump’s post, some criticized the politicization of the deaths; others defended him by pointing to Reiner’s history of criticizing Trump. These examples show disagreement among conservative and pro-Trump voices, not a single shared response. Axios’ account of the reactions describes both criticism and defense.

A separate viral screenshot purporting to show a post by Rob Reiner was not authentic. AFP reported that archived captures did not contain the purported post and that Reiner had previously responded to the same fabricated message: “This is not my account.” The screenshot should not be treated as evidence of Reiner’s views. AFP’s fact-check documents the debunking.
