‘Babygirl’ Director Halina Reijn Says the Milk Scene Happened to Her, Not Nicole Kidman

The milk scene in Babygirl is based on an experience that director Halina Reijn says happened to her, not to Nicole Kidman. In a December 2024 interview with W Magazine, Reijn described a night in her thirties when a famous Belgian actor, whom she called “way, way younger” than herself, sent her a glass of milk across a bar. Kidman plays the film’s version of the moment: Romy, a chief executive, drinking milk that an intern has ordered for her. The real-life account comes only from Reijn, and the actor has never been named.

What Reijn says happened

Reijn told W Magazine that she had performed in a theater production and went to a local bar afterward to burn off the adrenaline of the show. A man she describes as a famous Belgian actor, far younger than she was, sent a glass of milk over to her. In her words: “I drank it, and he just walked out.” She remembers the moment as both sensual and amusing: “I did think it was a very sensual thing to do. And I thought it was very funny.”

The interview does not name the actor, and no other source independently confirms the encounter. Reijn’s account is the only evidence for it, so it should be presented as her recollection.

How the film adapts the gesture

The film moves the gesture into a different setting and relationship. Romy (Nicole Kidman) is a CEO, and Samuel (Harris Dickinson) is her intern. At a company holiday party, Samuel arranges for a waiter to bring Romy a glass of milk. She drinks it, and as he leaves he says, “Good girl.” W Magazine describes the film as an erotic thriller with BDSM undertones.

  • Halina Reijn

The two versions differ in several ways, and it is useful to keep them separate:

Element Reijn’s real-life account Film scene
Setting A local bar after a theater performance A company holiday party (Reijn’s later interviews describe it as a bar as well)
People Reijn and a famous Belgian actor; actor unnamed Romy (CEO, played by Nicole Kidman) and Samuel (intern, played by Harris Dickinson)
Who delivers the milk The actor sends it across the room A waiter brings it on Samuel’s instruction
Ages Reijn in her thirties; the actor “way, way younger” Not stated in the interviews reviewed
Physical distance Not described beyond the glass traveling across the bar Characters are far apart; Reijn says “they don’t even touch”
Exit line He walks out “Good girl”
Source W Magazine, December 25, 2024 Film; described in W Magazine and Reijn’s interviews

The point of comparison is the gesture, not the event. The film takes an anecdote about one person’s night out and places it inside a power imbalance between a boss and an employee.

Why Reijn treats the scene as sexual

Reijn has described the milk moment as sexual precisely because nothing physical happens. In an interview with Backstage, she said: “For instance, when Samuel orders Romy to drink the glass of milk, to me, that is a sex scene even though they are physically incredibly far apart.” The Backstage article was updated January 21, 2025.

In a January 1, 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Reijn said: “The scene I find most arousing is when she drinks the milk and he’s at the other side of the bar. They don’t even touch.” Her framing in both interviews concerns the director’s interpretation of the fictional scene. It is not an additional account of the real-life incident.

What the screenplay shows

A production-draft screenplay of Babygirl, hosted by A24 and dated October 31, 2023, runs 91 pages. It contains a milk moment, but it is a separate one: Romy drinks from a saucer. The draft confirms that milk is part of the script’s visual vocabulary. It is not a commercial or published screenplay, and it says nothing about Reijn’s bar story.

What is and is not established

  • Established: Reijn has publicly described a real-life encounter with milk sent across a bar, and she has connected it to the film’s scene in several interviews.
  • Not established: the actor’s identity, the date and city of the bar night, or any independent confirmation from a witness or publication.
  • Not established: the ages of Romy and Samuel in the film, which the sources reviewed do not state.

Because the anecdote rests on a single account, avoid speculating about who the actor was. Online theories based on age comparisons go beyond what Reijn has said.
