The film was not snubbed at the Oscars across the board. It earned two nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, won the Visual Effects award, and lost in Costume Design.
How much the film has grossed worldwide
The figures below come from Box Office Mojo’s Top Lifetime Grosses chart, accessed October 8, 2026. Box Office Mojo is a third-party database, not the studio, and the chart is updated as new numbers come in. It shows the current listing, not a studio-certified final total, and it does not label the figure as final.

| Measure | Listed amount | Share of worldwide total |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide lifetime gross | $1,485,999,890 | 100% |
| Domestic (U.S. and Canada) | $404,340,010 | 27.2% |
| Foreign (outside U.S. and Canada) | $1,081,659,880 | 72.8% |
On the same chart, the film ranks 18th among worldwide lifetime grosses. Most of its money came from outside North America, which is the main reason the worldwide figure runs well ahead of the domestic total.
How far the film is from $1.5 billion
This is simple subtraction from the chart’s listed total: $1,500,000,000 minus $1,485,999,890 equals $14,000,110. The chart does not show the film crossing $1.5 billion, so the milestone is still ahead. Whether it is reached depends on future figures in the chart’s own listing.

Disney’s January checkpoint
The Walt Disney Company reported on January 4, 2026, in its release “Avatar: Fire and Ash Surpasses $1 Billion at the Global Box Office”, that the film had passed $1 billion worldwide. The total cited in that release was $1.083 billion: $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international, as of that date.
That number is an early snapshot, not a conflicting total. It was published nine months before the chart figure above, and the two sources use different dates and scopes, so one should not be read as correcting the other.

What the Oscar record shows
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, and honored films released in 2025. The Academy’s official ceremony page is the primary record of results. Avatar.com announced the film’s two nominations on January 22, 2026, in its nominations announcement.
| Category | Nominee(s) named in the announcement | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Costume Design | Deborah L. Scott | Nominated, did not win |
| Visual Effects | Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, Daniel Barrett | Nominated, won |
Visual Effects: the win
The film’s Visual Effects nomination turned into the one award it took home. 20th Century Studios’ film page lists the Visual Effects win and the Costume Design nomination among the film’s awards information. For the full category-by-category results, the Academy’s ceremony page is the record to check.

Costume Design: the nomination without a win
Deborah L. Scott’s Costume Design nomination did not convert into an award. The film was nominated in that category but was not the winner.
Why “snubbed” does not fit the record
A snub means being overlooked entirely, or being passed over in a category where a film was widely expected to be recognized. Two nominations and a win are not an overlooked film. If a reader believes a particular category should have produced a nomination, that is an opinion. The official record does not establish it, and this article does not treat it as fact.

Why the box office and Oscar stories are separate
The award results do not explain the gross, and the gross does not explain the awards. The Oscar outcome is a fixed record of nominations and one win. The box office total is a running figure that depends on release timing, territory and the chart’s updates. The sources reviewed here do not link the two, so a reader should treat them as separate claims.
