Baahubali has a documented theatrical and home-video history in Japan, along with licensed merchandise. Those records show that S.S. Rajamouli’s Telugu-language films reached Japanese cinemas and that a Japanese Blu-ray edition of the combined film is listed for release on June 3, 2026. They do not establish how large the Japanese audience was, so “pop-culture phenomenon” is better treated as a characterization than a measured fact.
What “Baahubali in Japan” means
Japan’s distributor TWIN lists both Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. It also lists a Japanese Blu-ray release of Baahubali: The Epic, a director-re-edited combination of the story. Bandai separately announced licensed merchandise for the Japanese market. Together, these are concrete signs of distribution and commercial activity—not evidence by themselves of mass popularity.

The Japanese theatrical releases
Baahubali: The Beginning
TWIN identifies the first film by its Japanese title, バーフバリ 伝説誕生, and describes it as a 2015 Indian Telugu-language film directed and written by S.S. Rajamouli. The distributor lists a limited theatrical run at Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo and Namba Parks Cinema in Osaka. Its listed runtime is 138 minutes. TWIN’s Japanese listing for Baahubali: The Beginning documents those details.
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
TWIN lists the sequel under the Japanese title バーフバリ 王の凱旋. The page gives a December 29 opening and names Shinjuku Piccadilly, Marunouchi TOEI and other cinemas nationwide. It identifies the film as a 2017 Indian Telugu-language production, also directed and written by Rajamouli, with a runtime of 141 minutes. The listing does not specify the year for the December 29 opening in the supplied details. TWIN’s Japanese listing for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion provides the release information.

Japanese Blu-ray: the combined film
TWIN’s catalog lists Baahubali: The Epic, a director-re-edited combination of the two films, as a two-disc Blu-ray edition, catalog number TWBS-5486. The listed Japanese release date is June 3, 2026. The feature runtime is 225 minutes. The catalog lists original audio including Telugu, Japanese dubbing, Japanese subtitles and Japanese subtitles for the dub. These details make this the clearest documented Japanese physical edition for viewers who want the combined cut; check the listing and stock before buying. TWIN’s Baahubali: The Epic catalog page has the edition details.
If choosing a release, first decide whether you want the combined re-edit or the individual films, then check the specific edition’s format and audio/subtitle options. The cited catalog confirms the features of this The Epic Blu-ray; it does not provide a complete comparison with other Japanese editions.

Bandai collaboration
On December 5, 2025, Bandai announced licensed Baahubali products for Japan, following its collaboration on Rajamouli’s RRR. The announced range included acrylic stands, message displays, keychains, face-shaped hangers, glow-in-the-dark shirts and towels. Bandai set the preorder period for December 5, 2025 through January 4, 2026, with expected shipment in February–March 2026. That preorder window has ended; the announcement does not establish whether any items remain available. Bandai’s announcement and product page describes the campaign.
Limited poster-and-ticket product
KADOKAWA/Movie Walker announced an A3 poster-and-ticket product for Baahubali: The Epic at ¥3,800, with sales scheduled for November 7–18, 2025. That sale period has passed, and the announcement is evidence of a limited promotional product, not current availability. Movie Walker’s announcement gives the product and sale-window details.
Does the evidence show that Baahubali was a Japanese pop-culture phenomenon?
The official records establish theatrical distribution, a Japanese physical edition and licensed merchandise. The sources cited here do not provide Japan-specific box-office revenue, admissions, audience surveys or another measure that would establish the scale of the film’s popularity. It is therefore accurate to say that Baahubali had a documented Japanese release and commercial presence; calling it a phenomenon goes beyond what these records measure.
