Its crews faced antiaircraft fire and German fighters in the early campaign, while the service expected them to complete 25 missions before returning home. That tour goal was no guarantee of survival: the Air Force Historical Support Division says the Eighth Air Force averaged an eight percent loss rate per mission by early 1943.
What was the B-17 Flying Fortress?
The B-17 was a four-engine heavy bomber used mainly by the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Europe during World War II. The Eighth Air Force began its bomber offensive against the Third Reich in August 1942. B-17s generally flew daylight missions, with the stated aim of improving bombing accuracy.
The Air Force Historical Support Division’s fact sheet, “Army Air Forces Aircraft: A Definitive Moment,” lists 12,692 B-17s produced, a 10-person crew, a maximum speed of 268 mph, and an unrefueled maximum range of 3,000 miles. The fact sheet does not specify a variant for these general figures, so they should not be read as exact specifications for every B-17 model. Why did B-17 crews face such danger?
In the early campaign, no fighter could accompany the bombers deep into occupied Europe and Germany itself, according to the Air Force Historical Support Division. B-17 formations therefore faced heavy antiaircraft fire and German fighter attacks. The division describes grievous losses of both aircraft and personnel. These conditions describe the early campaign; escort capability and losses did not necessarily remain the same throughout the war.

The division’s “Memphis Belle” fact sheet says that by early 1943 the Eighth Air Force averaged an eight percent loss rate per mission. That is a period-specific average for the Eighth Air Force, not a rate for every year, every B-17 operation, or every individual mission. It also should not be used to calculate a particular airman’s survival odds: risk was not necessarily identical from one mission to another. The figure does explain why a 25-mission tour expectation was no assurance that a crew would finish its tour. Air Force Historical Support Division: Memphis Belle
How many missions did a B-17 crew have to fly?
The expected tour for an Eighth Air Force aircrew was 25 missions before returning home, according to the Air Force Historical Support Division’s “Memphis Belle” fact sheet. This was a tour expectation, not a promise of safety or a guarantee that a crew would make it home. It refers to the crew’s missions, which are distinct from the number of missions flown by a particular aircraft.

What did the Memphis Belle and Hell’s Angels milestones mean?
The Memphis Belle story is often associated with the 25-mission mark, but the crew and the aircraft reached that mark on different dates. The distinction matters because a crew’s tour record belongs to the people, while an aircraft’s record belongs to the airframe.
| Milestone | Date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Hell’s Angels aircraft | May 13, 1943 | The B-17F Hell’s Angels, tail number 41-24577, completed 25 combat missions. The official account identifies it as the first heavy bomber in the European Theater to reach that mark. |
| Memphis Belle crew | May 17, 1943 | Lt. Robert Morgan and nine others became the first aircrew to complete 25 missions, on a raid against submarine pens at Lorient. |
| Memphis Belle aircraft | May 19, 1943 | The aircraft flew its own 25th mission, a flight to Kiel. |
The Memphis Belle was B-17F serial number 41-24485, assigned to the 324th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 91st Bombardment Group. After the crew completed its tour, it left England aboard the aircraft on June 9, 1943, for a U.S. war-bond tour. The Army Air Forces filmed aboard the Memphis Belle and other group aircraft; William Wyler’s documentary using that material was released publicly in 1944. The documentary helped make the Memphis Belle more famous, but it does not change the earlier Hell’s Angels aircraft milestone. Air Force Historical Support Division: Hell’s Angels
