There is no single Azure region that is fastest for every YouTube stream watched in India. Shortlist Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai), and West India (Mumbai) based on where your viewers are, then measure the route from your actual VM and test playback on affected viewers’ networks before moving. Azure’s published region-to-region latency figures measure traffic across Microsoft’s backbone—not a VM’s path to YouTube or a viewer’s playback latency.
Why a nearby Azure region is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee
Physical distance can add network latency, so Microsoft advises choosing regions that minimize latency for the primary user base and checking performance against your goals. But “India” is not one network endpoint: viewers in different cities and on different internet service providers can have different routes and playback results.
Moving a VM may change its route to YouTube, but Microsoft’s regional guidance does not predict whether a particular move will improve a particular stream. There is no YouTube-specific measurement here for the three Indian regions, and no universal latency threshold established for ordinary YouTube streaming. Treat a nearby region as a candidate to test, not a fix you can assume will work.
Which Azure regions should you compare in India?
Microsoft lists three Azure regions in India: Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, and West India in Mumbai. Shortlist them according to the cities and networks that make up your principal audience, and confirm that your required VM size and services are currently available in each candidate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Azure’s published figures can provide cloud-network context, but they are not a substitute for end-to-end testing. Microsoft reports monthly P50 round-trip times from continuous internal Azure backbone probes sampled at one-minute intervals. For the 30 days ending July 30, 2026, the table lists 20 ms from Central India to South India and 29 ms from Central India to Jio India West. These are directional Azure-to-Azure backbone measurements—not YouTube-path or viewer-playback figures. Microsoft also cautions that latency can differ in the reverse direction because traffic may take a different route each way.
Use these numbers to understand that Azure regions are connected over a measured backbone, not to predict how your stream will perform. Microsoft recommends testing actual workloads when you need measurements relevant to your own deployment.

How to test before relocating the VM
- Map the audience and setup. Record the VM’s current Azure region, the main viewer cities and ISPs, and how the stream is delivered. Distinguish traffic initiated by the VM from playback on viewers’ devices; they are different network paths.
- Shortlist viable regions. Compare Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai against your audience distribution. Check the current Azure region list and verify the required VM size, services, and availability-zone options in each location.
- Measure the real paths. From the deployed VM configuration, collect repeated route and latency measurements toward the relevant YouTube endpoints. Separately test playback from affected viewer networks. For playback, observe startup delay, buffering, throughput, packet loss, and delivered quality over a representative period.
- Keep comparisons like-for-like. Where possible, use the same VM size, operating system, stream settings, test duration, and measurement times in each candidate region. Repeat tests for the major viewer networks and at representative times. A single result may reflect a temporary route or network condition rather than typical performance.
- Compare the result with your objective. Decide which measures matter to your stream—such as startup delay, stability, or buffering—and compare those observations across regions. Do not infer viewer experience from a VM-to-destination latency figure alone.
Could Azure routing preference affect the result?
For supported public IP configurations, Azure documents routing through Microsoft’s global network and routing through ISP transit. These options use different paths and can have different egress pricing. Support depends on the current region and resource SKU, so verify eligibility before planning around the setting. Microsoft says routing preference is selected when the public IP is created and cannot be changed afterward.
Routing preference is another variable to test, not a known YouTube optimization: Microsoft’s documentation does not say which option will perform better for YouTube from your VM. Compare eligible configurations under similar conditions and include egress cost in the decision.

Choose on performance and operational fit
After measuring the network paths and viewer playback, compare the candidate regions across the factors that affect your deployment:
- Audience and measured performance: where viewers are, which ISPs they use, and how the VM route and actual playback behave.
- Technical availability: required VM sizes, services, capacity, and availability zones in the candidate region.
- Cost: regional pricing and applicable egress costs, including any difference associated with routing preference.
- Compliance and data residency: whether the region meets your requirements.
- Resilience: how the deployment will handle regional disruption and recovery, including whether a multi-region design is needed.
Microsoft’s selection guidance treats proximity as one consideration alongside compliance, service capabilities, cost, capacity, and resilience. A region that measures well in one test may not be the right choice if it fails another requirement.
