AWS vs. Google Cloud for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live Channel

A YouTube-only 24/7 4K60 channel may not need AWS or Google Cloud. Compare direct ingest, Google’s UHD output limit, AWS’s distribution architecture, continuity needs and workload-based pricing.

For a YouTube-only channel, start by asking whether you need AWS or Google Cloud at all. YouTube automatically transcodes a compatible incoming live feed for viewers, so sending a stable 4K60 signal directly to YouTube can avoid the cost and operating work of a separate cloud video pipeline. If the channel continuously plays uploaded recordings rather than producing a live camera or studio feed, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day.

AWS and Google Cloud make sense when you need managed ingest and transcoding, a controlled failover design, or distribution beyond YouTube. They are not interchangeable turnkey answers to “24/7 4K60”: Google documents UHD input up to 2160p60 at 50 Mbps, but UHD output up to 2160p60 at 25 Mbps; YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 2160p60 ingest. AWS’s cited reference architecture includes encoding, packaging and CDN delivery. Neither vendor’s published example prices establish a like-for-like cost for a 24/7 4K60 YouTube channel.

Which option fits your 24/7 channel?

Choose based on what produces the video and where it must go. A pre-recorded playlist, a live camera feed, and a multi-destination broadcast are different workloads; buying a cloud transcoding stack before identifying yours can add components without solving a real problem.

Option Best fit What it does in this workflow Main qualification
StreamNeo A YouTube channel that should continuously play uploaded recordings or a playlist Uploads are looped from StreamNeo’s cloud to YouTube; add the YouTube stream key and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not take a live camera feed or replace a managed transcoding and multi-platform distribution pipeline. One flat price per slot for the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps.
Direct encoder to YouTube A live production with a compatible, stable encoder feed and YouTube as the destination The encoder sends to YouTube, which automatically transcodes the incoming live stream for viewers. The source encoder, network and recovery process remain yours to operate.
Google Cloud Live Stream API A managed cloud ingest/transcoding workflow producing HLS or DASH outputs Ingests a source, transcodes renditions and publishes live outputs; primary and backup inputs are supported. Documented UHD output is capped at 25 Mbps; active channels may be restarted after 24 hours and need a recovery plan.
AWS MediaLive, MediaPackage and CloudFront A managed live distribution design involving encoding, packaging and CDN delivery AWS’s reference design ingests two feeds, creates adaptive-bitrate HLS, packages HLS/DASH/CMAF and distributes through CloudFront. This reference establishes a possible managed workflow, not a requirement for publishing only to YouTube or a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.

For YouTube-only viewing, first test whether a direct encoder feed is enough. YouTube handles the viewer-facing renditions; a separate CDN stage is relevant only if your distribution plan calls for it. For a prerecorded 24/7 channel, compare that DIY operation with StreamNeo before pricing a cloud pipeline. For live production, continue with the AWS and Google Cloud trade-offs below.

How the video path changes the decision

Direct to YouTube

The path is encoder → YouTube ingest → YouTube’s viewer-facing transcodes. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats. That viewer transcoding is distinct from cloud-originated processing: YouTube does not make a cloud encoder necessary merely because the channel is 4K.

YouTube Help lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among its supported encoder settings and supports up to 60fps. For H.264 at 4K/2160p60, it recommends 35 Mbps; its listed AV1/H.265 range at that resolution and frame rate is 10–40 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not Google Cloud input limits.

Google Cloud to YouTube

The path is source encoder → Google Cloud input → Live Stream API processing/output → YouTube ingest. Treat the two network legs as separate connections. Google Cloud’s best-practices page recommends SRT for an encoder-to-Google input when supported, citing packet recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams and higher bandwidth as advantages over RTMP. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS for the destination. An SRT input to Google is not an SRT connection to YouTube.

Google Cloud documents UHD input up to 2160p/60 at 50 Mbps and UHD output up to 2160p/60 at 25 Mbps. Its best-practices table recommends 50 Mbps H.264 for 2160p60 input and 25 Mbps H.264 for 2160p50/60 output. The 25 Mbps output cap is below YouTube’s 35 Mbps H.264 2160p60 recommendation. That does not by itself prove the stream will fail or look poor, but it is a meaningful design constraint: confirm that the output profile meets your quality target rather than assuming the cloud service passes through your 50 Mbps source unchanged.

AWS managed distribution

AWS’s documented reference deployment uses Elemental MediaLive for ingest and encoding, Elemental MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for distribution. It uses two input feeds and creates adaptive-bitrate HLS output, with MediaPackage also packaging HLS, DASH and CMAF. This is a distribution architecture, not a one-step YouTube relay. If YouTube is the only audience destination, establish why packaging and CDN delivery are needed before adding them.

What to compare before choosing a cloud

Build a matched workload rather than comparing service names or isolated estimates. Record these assumptions for both vendors:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Source and destination: Is the source a live encoder or uploaded video, and is YouTube the only destination? List any required non-YouTube outputs separately.
  • Video profile: Specify 2160p, 60fps, codec, input bitrate, output bitrate, audio profile and number of renditions. A 4K60 input does not mean every service outputs the same profile or bitrate.
  • Continuity design: State whether you need redundant source inputs, automated recovery, monitoring, and a tested restart procedure. Redundancy in an architecture diagram is not a service-level guarantee.
  • Active time and region: Use the intended region and the real number of channel-hours. A 24/7 service runs for roughly 720 hours in a 30-day month; calculate the actual billing period and active time rather than multiplying an event quote without checking its assumptions.
  • Distribution and audience: Include expected traffic and CDN egress only where the cloud service is delivering to viewers. YouTube handles its own viewer delivery when it is the destination.
  • Operations: Include who will configure, monitor and recover the source, cloud channel, output and YouTube ingest. The lowest service line item may not be the lowest total operating cost.

The documented products do not map one-to-one: Google Live Stream API is described as managed ingest and transcoding into HLS/DASH outputs, while the cited AWS reference includes a CDN delivery stage. Compare the bill and failure modes of the actual architecture you intend to run, not a theoretical AWS-versus-Google label.

24/7 continuity and recovery

Plan for Google channel restarts

Google’s quota documentation says a channel that remains in an active state for 24 hours may be restarted. A continuously running design therefore needs monitoring and an automated or operational path to resume publishing after a restart. Test the complete lifecycle—including recovery and YouTube’s receipt of the resumed output—instead of assuming one channel resource remains active forever.

Do not infer an uptime guarantee from redundancy

The AWS reference describes redundant inputs, but the cited material does not certify uninterrupted 24/7 operation for this specific YouTube use. Neither the presence of two inputs nor a managed service proves zero interruption. Define the acceptable interruption and recovery target, then test source loss, cloud processing interruption, output loss and YouTube ingest recovery against it.

For a direct encoder

Test before going live and monitor YouTube stream health during operation, as YouTube Help advises. Verify that the encoder can sustain its selected profile and that the network path remains stable for long runs. Decide in advance how the operator will restart the encoder and reconnect the YouTube output after a local or network failure.

What the published prices do—and do not—tell you

There is no supportable blanket cost winner in the cited documentation. Google Cloud pricing varies with input and output resolution and how long each channel is active. Google specifies a ten-minute minimum charge and, after that, rounds active duration up to the nearest minute. For a 24/7 estimate, calculate the chosen region, number of inputs and renditions at current rates.

AWS’s planning guide gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour live event with about 1,000 viewers using its SD-540p profile, for encoding, packaging and distribution under that guide’s assumptions. It is an AWS example, not a quote for 4K60, a 24/7 channel, or a YouTube-only workflow. The guide also describes a separate 10,000-viewer HD-1080p example; neither scenario can be carried over as a 4K60 monthly estimate. Regional availability and service-specific rates matter.

For either cloud, calculate the complete selected workflow using current regional pricing and the same assumptions. Include running hours, input and output profiles, rendition count, redundancy and—where applicable—audience delivery. Do not treat a one-hour event estimate as a monthly price.

Copyright and channel suitability still matter

Technical uptime does not grant permission to broadcast a recording. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to use, and check whether a continuous loop fits YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for your channel. Repeatedly streaming material without the rights or meaningful permission can create problems independent of which cloud or encoder carries it. StreamNeo provides a free copyright safety checklist; it is a preparation aid, not legal advice or a substitute for YouTube’s current policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the channel runs uploaded recordings or playlists rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a simpler fit than building an AWS or Google transcoding pipeline: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the upload from its cloud, so nothing at home has to stay on. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for prerecorded uploads, not a live camera or studio production, and it streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
